    Vaccinated for mg?

Has anyone successfully vaccinated for MG? I have a vet coming to our hobby farm to confirm diagnosis. I have grow outs and week old chicks that have not had contact with the flock. We raise chickens as pets, as well as for meat and eggs. We are also interested in breeding and selling chicks...

    Chicken tractor/breeding pen/feed

We just started 4 hens in a tractor. We think we will move it every third day. In a couple of weeks, we will add a roo for a few days just to make sure he covers all the girls. Then he will go back to the flock. We might also swap out hens every few weeks. We raise dual purpose birds and the...

moving a broody hen (pictures requested)

My broody hen won't stay put. I would love to let her hatch eggs, but she keeps moving. She seems to want to sit on everything but what I want her to sit on, including fake eggs :barnie Will moving her break her broody? When I was trying to break brood in the past, I moved them for a couple of...

New to chickens. New to compost.

I want to put a compost bin in my chicken run to use in my small veggie garden. I’ve planted potatoes and garlic. If I put the left over greens in the compost of the run, will it hurt my birds?

Swollen eye, no smell, matted beard

Two days ago, Ms Maybel didn’t greet me by flying onto my lap. Instead, I found her huddled under a chair in the run. (She had already laid that day— she’s less than a year old) I picked her up and noticed her eye was matted shut. Her mouth is open more than normal and I thought I saw blood...

    Small awning ideas?

I added more ventilation but now I need two awnings. What have other people used? One needs to be about a foot long, the other needs to be about two feet. (The rest of the ventilation already has awnings coming off the roof )

Chicken not molting? Or a slow molt?

I have an Appenzeller Spitzhauben who doesn’t seem to be molting. The feathers on her body and tail look rough. I think she’s almost three. She lays a good sized egg every other day, if not daily. I tried taking away the supplemental light, but it’s dark in the coop when we put up plastic for...

    Freeloading chicken

Meet Karen. She is out biggest bird. We got her as a chick in March. She laid a couple of eggs in the heat of summer (East Texas 8000 degrees in the summer). Then, she just stopped. She doesn’t really fit in a nesting box. The few eggs she did lay were on the ground in the back of the coop...

    EE gender. 3 months

Tail feathers say Roo. Neck feathers lean to Pullet. Gets picked on a lot these days, but I think it’s because it looks so different from my other birds. Raised by boody hen.

    Black spot on Roo’s waddle

He acts fine. I notice a small black dot about two weeks ago. I figured he approached a lady that wasn’t interested. Now it’s a black line. It’s only on one side.

Deep litter run/coop, East Texas rain, garden lime

I’m doing DLM in my run (DBM in coop). I’m using pine from TSC because that’s what I have access to. I think I’m allergic to DE (contact dermatitis). We have 6 inches of bedding at the high spots and zero inches where the ladies dig when they are hot. After this last rain, I turned the bedding...

Not touching oyster shells? Thin eggs

This is one of my two feeding stations. (I have two more watering, one without nipples, because it’s super hot right now) My buff Orpington is either 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 years old. The lady I got her from couldn’t remember. We updated the coop a few weeks ago which scared her. She laid a rubbery egg...

    Wading pool in run? Flies??

This week we will be in the 90s but I expect triple digits soon. We tried adding a pink plastic pool in the run, but the birds wouldn’t go in it. We are thinking about adding pebbles to it, a small amount of water, and a frozen milk jug of water. We might even add a box fan on the outside of the...

    50% shade tarp

My yard has no shade from about noon on. So, I’m trying to make shade. I don’t know if these 50% blockage tarps are gonna work. It didn’t get above 90 today, so it wasn’t a good test. We don’t want to plant shrubs because of snakes and we might need to expand. The coop has a box fan. Some of the...

New to deep litter method (and chickens). Any adice

I live in East Texas. My coop is a converted metal shed. Just over 5x11. There are concrete pavers for the floor, but also dirt. We made a window and have a box fan in there. The people door is hardware wire. My run is 18x18– dirt and grass, an old tree stump, and an old play house where we...
