My father-in-law was cutting hay and ran over a turkey nest, killing the mother before he realized it. He brought us around 5 eggs, but since we trashed our incubator we couldn't hatch them. Well, my daughter gave them to a friend was hatching chickens.
Today we are quite shocked that one...
Hey all,
We are looking for some hatching eggs to set by the end of November. We're not too picky about breeds (variety is fun!), but it would be nice to get a few good layers.

Hey all,
I copied the 50lb scrap wood feeder design from the learning center. Worked out great. I recommend it if you got access to scrap wood and have a pretty dry coop. Got some pics on our page.

Our chickens have been laying for 3 months now.
On Sunday we removed an "extra" roo from the coop. The laying tapered off all week and then on Thursday we got NO eggs. Is this due to the missing member of the flock.
If so when will they get over it? Or is it something else?
I have noticed...
Ok, this is our third hatch.
First hatch - nothing - long story revolving around oil on eggs.
Second hatch - 9 out of 14 - we were pleased and the chicks are now around 4 months and we are looking forward to eggs!
Third hatch - 39 eggs - due this wednesday - we are acting as surrogate...
We have a total of 9 day-old or a couple hour old chicks. A couple of them had pieces on shell stuck on them and their fur is kinda dried and matted. Should I attempt to clean them when we remove them from the incubator?
Also two have dried stuff on their tommys - same question as above.
Our first chick hatched at 6am this morning. We still have three with pips. When should we move to brooder?
Should we wait until all have dried or what?
We set our second batch of eggs on the 6th around 9:30am. Our first batch was the ones with the oil!
We candled on day 14 and saw what our inexperienced eyes thought were chickens. We're now starting day 21 (I think) and I'm having doubts since we're seeing NO action yet.
Any words of...
Ok, we have candled and I believe we have chicks on the way. Here's the question. When do you acutally stop turning and remove the turner? The start of day 18 or the end of day 18. We set the eggs on Feb 6 around 9:30am.
When should we take out the turner?
If I set my eggs on the 6th in the morning around 10am, when should we remove the egg turner? We want to do this hatch as perfectly as humans are capable of!!
We homeschool + we're studying birds + I grew up on a farm with chickens = sweet daughter raking leaves like a maniac to buy her own incubator.
The whole family (parents, grandparents and great grandparents) were counting down the days to "Chickee Day"... it was yesterday.
Today we still have...
