So. My 24 week pullets have been frolickingly, free-ranging on half an acre under the Ohio summer sun for their whole lives. These are my first chickens. They’re pets and I have no expectations of them except love.
That being said, Winter is coming. What can I expect? Will they still want to be...
My 21 week old Buff Orpington keeps drinking out of my wine glass every time I leave it unattended. I have to take it with me everywhere I go.
Is this odd?
My 17 week old cockeral crows at least 10 times a day. He starts in the coop so early that it's still pitch black. He crows again when the sun comes up. He crows again within a couple of hours. He's crowing right now!
This goes on every couple or so of hours. All Day. Several crows each time...
This morning my flock is really enjoying their fermented food with broccoli. Yesterday they loved some watermelon.
What are some things your chickens really like to eat?
I've told the story 100 times. Bought 7 day-old female chicks from Meyer back in April. 1 of them turned out to be male.
Anyhow, since the situation presented itself, I really think it would be so great to hatch babies just one time. I have room for a few more.
Obviously, due to the small size...
I have just finished my first batch of Fermented feed and my chickens loved it. I followed directions from a more general thread on BYC.
Looking on the internet, I see some people cover with cheesecloth, some set the lid lightly on top and some totally close it up.
What are the fermenter's...
My 7 chicks are now 14 and 15 weeks old (calculated wrong on another thread). They're all healthy and have always lived in moderate weather. The only real hiccup I've had is the one that turned out to be a Rooster.
I have no idea about broodiness (except in my kids), laying, cold weather...
In the last 3 1/2 months, my babies have really grown. It's definitely time for a bigger Garage Coop!
They're free range and only in at night, but Roost space is at a premium.
So, I’m rebuilding my coop. A while back I saw a post with pictures where a headboard (maybe a footboard?) was used to build nesting boxes.
I swear I saved that post but now I can’t find it. A search brings up some threads but I must not be looking closely enough or remembering it quite right...
I have 7 chickens. My grandchildren (and me) love to hand feed scratch and meal worms. I think we must be giving them too many treats because they only go through about 2 cups of feed a day. They were hatched 4/4/2022 and are on grower feed. Are we giving them too much of what they want instead...
Has anyone ever built a chicken coop inside out?
Building the inside walls first with the studs to the outside?
I want the coop now but I want to insulate and put up exterior shiplap later when I have more time and have recovered from rotator cuff surgery.
I have a pretty shed at my new home that I had planned on converting into a chicken coop. It’s 16’3” X 10’3” so it’s way big enough.
I want a couple of pygmy goats too.
My question is, can you wall the inside into 2 halves and have goats on one side and chickens on the other? Separate doors...
Good Morning!
As I’ve said in other threads, I’ve moved to 2 acres and want to get 2 goats, chickens, beehives and a bat house. Basically just as pets.
My question is, what is the smallest size flock of hens that you recommend?
I mean, how many are needed for them to feel secure and happy?
I've always wanted to be homesteadish.
Emphasis on the ISH. I only want the fun facade part.
Pet chickens and 2 goats. Same sex. No breeding allowed. And a couple beehives and a bat house.
I'd for sure plant a garden. Planting is wonderful, but I only like to weed when I feel like it so we...
