My prize rooster got into a fight with a stall fan and lost. No lacerations, but I think his leg is out of socket. You know how when you eat a drumstick on the top it's round and there's a groove in the big bone that goes in the socket? I can feel that outside of his hip and above it under his...
It's been this way for about 5-6 hours. That great hole and crack happened in one whack, and then he's never moved again except to sit there breathing and occasionally cheeping. I'm worried with such a huge hole, that he's dried himself out.
Also - does the beak look odd to anyone else?
My last hatch had one chick that was moving around and whatnot on day 20 and then never made it out. Didn't even break it's membrane, much less pip. It was in the proper position. What might have gone wrong? I've got more due in 2 weeks, don't want a repeat.
I have 2 eggs in my latest batch which I popped into incubation 2 days after the first batch. Are they going to be safe to lockdown on what (for them) is day 16? And will the egg soccer hurt them?
She's in a safe, dry, draft free place. I can't get to her though. We're going to have temps in the 20s overnight for weeks...she's due Thanksgiving day.. is she hosed? Any chance of babies?
I have a decomposing mouse stuck in thr coop wall. Obviously, it smells...short of dismantling my coop, it's going to have to stay there. Is there anything chicken safe I can put on it to speed it up or help the odor? It's stuck between 2 layers of hardware cloth and they can peck it.
Youngish - maybe 5 months, hasn't started mating or crowing yet, and he's already a good 7 pounds. One of the prettiest birds I have ever seen. In the sun, he's a gorgeous dark green iridescent colour. But I already have 1 big boy and 2 banty roos and not enough girls, so I'd like to find him...
I have a hen that is chasing my rooster off another hen whenever he tries to mount her. I should note that he's too big for the second hen and I should probably get rid of her before he hurts her. I can't figure out if the first one is jealous, or saving her friend. I've never seen anything...
They are extremely aggressive and must be sold. Or eaten. Are they both girls? They are just short of point of lay age if they are. No one is crowing and the floppy combed one checks out nests.
Title says it all. I've never even owned a dog before, much less a working dog. I know about how to care for them, having done so from time to time and also from working in a shelter, but I don't know any specifics about chicken to dog and vice versa communicable illnesses. Is there anything...
She was fine last night, when I got up this morning, I noticed she didn't want to come off the roost. To get on and off the roost requires a series of hops, and every time she'd hop from one level to the next, she'd stick her butt in the air, head down, and walk backward a few steps before...
Pullet, right? It's got HUGE thick legs. And it grew in it's comb and wattles like that (and that red) at 5 weeks. They have never increased in size, just stayed like this proportionally. No crowing. It's never faced off or fought with the other young roosters.
I'm getting an English Shepherd puppy. While it will be welcome in the house from time to time, I intend for it to live with and work with my chickens full time after it grows up. I'm inclined to get it a crate to sleep in at night in the chicken coop (which is a converted 12x12 barn) so that...
I've got a new crower and it's wonderful! He has a 3 note crow that sounds like a very deep voiced mourning dove vs. a chicken. It's positively melodious. Is this normal for this breed?
My coop is infested with pissants. I have places in their line where I can put the little ant trap bait things behind a wire where the chickens can't get it. If they ate a poisoned ant or 10,000 will they get sick like cats and dogs do eating poisoned rodents?
Here's the catch. It's developing a very slight cross beak, but it's only 4 weeks old. Chances are it will get worse. I do not have the time or patience to deal with it, beyond holding it's beak in place for 3 x 10 minutes a day.
If it doesn't show improvement in a week, I'm going to cull...
They hatched on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The hens are taking them a few feet away to food and water, but are still not really taking care of themselves. I'm worried for their health, one of them sat for nearly 5 weeks. (I wasn't sure she was serious, first timer.) When will they start...
I've got 2 girls. They are both due this weekend through Tuesday and have 9 developing eggs.
I've never done this before. They are in a safe, predator free, floor level environment.
For those of you who've done broodies, what did you wish you knew the first time around?
And are the mamas...
