Well, Lock and Stock passed away 2 months apart. Now it's just Barrel. I seriously think it's their food that was making them sick, so I've cut Barrel's food with caged bird Egg food to see if that helps. So far it's been a week and Barrel seems to be okay. She's terribly lonely, though. The...
So yeah. Got another quail hen with mysterious symptoms. I don't know what Wry neck looks like, but it sure looks like it from the pictures I've seen. She stands in one spot with her neck outstretched and tilted to the side. Came upon her quite suddenly - she was normal yesterday. What can I do...
They're actually looking at potentially allowing Chickens in the city with the upgrade of the Responsible Pet Ownership by law here in Winnipeg! We won't know if they've been accepted until April 2022. If so, I'll be stoked! :)
Well, technically it starts tomorrow, but I have 8 eggs I selected from the tray of eggs I bought from the Real Canadian Superstore. For those who missed it - I plan on doing an experiment with my cheap-o incubator. I have to calibrate the temp still, but this is what I have for when I set the...
Well, it seems Stock and Barrel are regularly fighting the past few days. There's a lot of pecking and fluttering of wings. I'm no sure what starts it, except that it goes in spurts, usually in the evening. Could it be as simple as a personality conflict?
.... My dog is being a gigantic PITA today. She pulled my winter jacket off the pile it was on, where I thought she wouldn't get at it and not only gutted it (White fluff everywhere), but peed AND pooped on it. Good thing I have another jacket! She's also been raiding the garbages and recycling...
I'm wondering what Coturnix types are most often kept as breeding and laying stock for supermarkets? I'm guessing Jumbo Wild types, but I realize some specialize in breeding their own variation to meet their suppliers' needs. Just curious. :)
I have a question about chicken aprons. Why do people put them on their birds? Is it to protect against an over enthusiastic Roo? Keep them warm? Fashionable good looks? All of the above? :)
Just curious :)
So folks know I do art, I have quail, conures and cockatiels, but I've not mentioned my little brat, Winter. She's a purebred italian Greyhound and is my service dog. She's going to be 3 years old in July. She's too smart for her own good, being able to pull DVDs off my tightly packed DVD...
One of my hens is not standing. She struggles to get up and lays on her side, kicking out. I'm setting up a hospital cage for her. She doesn't seem to be eating or drinking. Any ideas as to what would cause this? She's between 11 and 16 weeks old.
Just curious about the stories behind some of your BYC screen names :) Mine, Vampiric Conure, is play on the fact conures bite and the fact I had a character named Conure who was an energy vampire. I used it once to sign into another forum about 16 years ago and the name kinda stuck :)
Somewhere I saw on youtube a fellow who did an experiment with his quail eggs. Half he turned during incubation, half he did not. He got almost equal hatch rates doing it both ways. I wish I could remember who did it.
What are your thoughts? Is Turning absolutely necessary? I would say yes, but...
I came across a cheap brooder on wamart.ca and thought I'd give it a try. It only holds 5-7 chicken eggs but for quail I think it would be perfect as I don't want a whole herd of fuzzy misfits, LOL. We'll see how it works out. I also plan on trying locally bred quail eggs and see if the store...
I thought I'd ask and see if I'm the only one who keeps quail in an apartment setting. I don't have many, but I am in an... unusual setting apparently :)
I love the paranormal. The spookier the better.
I love love love Moe Sargi, OmargoshTV and Paranormal Nightmare (Fourman Brothers for the win!). They do ghost hunts and explore abandoned buildings. They find some pretty cool stuff. Then there's Really Haunted, who's a family that lives in a...
Just a general question - How do you tolerate dispatching/cleaning birds? I have enough problems killing mice with mouse traps. How do you handle the gore of cleaning them? Is it something you gradually learn to live with? I'd love to raise my own birds for meat, but I admit, dispatching is a...
I'm wondering if any of you have fed Zupreem or other small parrot/small bird pellets as a rare treat to your quail? I want to give something different to my girls, but I don't want to make them sick :)
One of my quail is making a weird crying sound that sounds very much like a baby crying. It's a high pitched 'Aaaaah hahaha haaaaaaaa' sound. I thought it was one of my cockatiels, but today I heard the quail making it. I hope everything is okay with them! ANyone else ever experience this sound?
