One of my bufffs has been setting since 10-01-12 and as of this afternoon still no chicks.
What is disturbing is the terrible smell that I can actually smell outside coop.
Could she be setting on rotten eggs?

We just had our first brood and out of 5 eggs Lilly was sitting on only 2 managed to actually hatch. The first one we named Alpha and the second one Bittie.
After the first week it was obvious Alpha was a tad different than its sibling. Alpha seemed to want to sleep every time it got still...
We are new in this great hobby and I just finished a book on raising chickens and this book never debated whether throwing feed on the ground for them to eat whenever they want or whether to install feeders whetherr hanging or wall mount.
Also, what is the best.....keeping feed available 24-7...
I have 5 Buff Orpingtons, 1- roo and 4 girls.
The roo has clean looking behind but 2 of the girls have kind of matted and dirty vent areas.
I have picked each one up and tried to spray the areas with flea and tick spray.

we are new to this great past time but we have a problem. Our roo has been attacking only one of the hens.....not to mate, but actually has jumped on her and pecked her so badly that the back side of her head has a huge scab on it. We thought this would pass but this behaviour has persisted...
