    Nests

I have 4 Columbian Wyandot bantams that just started laying eggs. The problem is that they only lay while on the roast so the eggs land in the droppings. There are 4 fresh clean nests available but they do not use them. Any thoughts on how to get them to use the nests. I have had chickens before...

    Calm Bantams

What bantam breed might be considered calm to have in a small flock. I have had some mixed bantams in the past and all roosters seemed to be aggressive. At my advanced age I would like to get a very small flock of the same breed bantams that tend to be calm. Thanks in advanced.

    Rooster to hen ratio

I have 1 rooster and 5 Dominque hens that are about 5 months old. Is this a good ratio for hatching some chicks in the spring?

    FEATHER PICKING?

I have seven 5 month old Dominiques. Five hens and two roosters. I am finding a lot of feathers around the coop. Also notice the tail feathers on the roosters seem to be ragged. Could this be feather picking? See photo. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have 7 chicks about 5 weeks old. Two have pronounced black / grey barreding while 5 are mostly black with little barreding. Is this common until they mature? Thanks

    Problems!

Well I think I'm all done with chickens. I have raised chickens on and of since I was a young kid and I am now 75 years old. I've had problems over the years but this winter was the worst. I've had regular laying hens, backyard mixes, Bantams, White Chanteclers and Buff Chanteclers most...

    NOT USING NESTS OR ROOST

Have 9 hens that are 6 months old and just starting to lay. Some still do not use the roost at night but sleep in the corner of the coop. About half of the eggs are in the nest boxes and the other half are around the coop in the litter. I have blocked off the dark area under the roost droppings...

Hens are taking lots of dirt bathes and preaning each other. I'm thinking mites. If this is the case what is the best method to get rid of them? Thanks

    Culling Injury

Had to cull 14 chicks today all went well quickly for the chicks. The problem was with me as I cut my finger in the process. The cut came in contact with the blood from the chicks. I wonder if anyones knows if this is a problem. Concerned about infections etc. Thanks.

    MITES

Last year I had a problem with mites. I got rid of my flock in October and cleaned the coop but did not us any insecticide. The coop has been empty all winter with temperatures down to -25 many times during the season. Is it correct to assume the mites will be gone or is more work needed before...

    Dominique vs Buff Chantecler

Going to be getting some more chicks and have narrowed it down to either Dominiques or Buff Chanteclers. Have had both White and Buff Chanteclers before but have no experience with Dominiques. Any info. anyone has comparing these two breeds would be helpful. Thanks

    Feather picking

I have a flock of 11 (10 hens and 1 rooster) White Chanteclers that are 18 months old. My plan was to hatch some chicks last spring but none of the hens went broody. At first I noticed that some of the hens were loosing back feathers but assumed it was damage from the rooster. As the summer went...

    Chantecler egg laying

I have 10 White Chantecler hens that are 9 months old. I get only 1 or 2 eggs a day. I think the same two hens are laying on a fairly regular basis. Should I expect the others to start laying when it warms up or are these two the only ones that will lay? Thanks!

    Number of Eggs

I have 10 White Chanteclers that are 30 weeks old. About the last 3 weeks I have been getting 2 eggs per day. Is it normal that only 2 of the 10 hens are laying at this point in time? Also one of them is laying a double yoker about once a week. Have had hens in the past and when one started to...

    inbreeding

I hope this is the correct place to ask this question. I purchased some White Chantecler chickens last year and kept 10 hens and one rooster. I have hatched 12 chicks with this rooster from random eggs from the 10 hens. Next spring can I save one rooster from these chicks and hatch eggs from the...

    introducing new chickens to flock

I have five one year old hens. I also have fifteen new chicks coming the end of April. I would like some advise as to when and how to best introduce the new chicks to the flock. I have one coop at this point that is 8'x8' with a 7'x12' covered run. Also connected to the run is a 20'x30' fenced...

    Feathers

I have 12 chicks that are now 8 weeks old. I just noticed that the coop and run have a lot of feathers on the ground. Could this be a problem or is it perhaps some kind of molt? The days are getting shorter and the nights are cool here in Northern New England. Thanks!

    broody hen

How can you tell for sure that a hen is broody? Are there particular signs, etc.? I have a hen that is fluffed out on the nest and does not want to move when I collect the eggs. She seems real protective of the egg or eggs, but does not return quickly if removed from them.

    Egg Laying

Is it common for Chanteclers to stop laying at 9 months as the weather gets colder? I have 10 hens who where producing about 8 eggs per day up until mid November. The egg production has been going down daily and there were no eggs as of noon today (December 5th). Thanks in advance for any comments.
