    The way they are constructed only the back tip of the valve is exposed to the water. They will only freeze if the pipe or pail freezes.

    You could build this setup and never have to worry about water. I put feed in and water out. The feed stays dry and they don't need water at night.

    If sedinent is the problem you could mount the horizontal nipples 3" off the bottom. That would leave room for the trash to settle at the bottom.
