I live in Wisconsin where it can get to -20 with several weeks in the single digits. I do not heat my coop nor do I use supplemental lighting. My coop walls are insulated however, with what most people would consider a lot of open ventilation at ceiling height. I also keep all food and water in...
I found my 10 month old partridge rock hen inside the coop looking very weird. Her wings are drooping and she stumbles when she tries to walk. She was broody last month and sat on some fertilized eggs I got from another chicken owner but her chicks were eaten by the other hens. We don't have a...
My fives hens are scared of everything, yet I swear whenever a grey squirrel is anywhere near their run they run/fly over to where it is at as if they wanted to get it, like they do with flying insects. Am I imagining this? Has anyone ever seen a chicken or a group of chickens take out a...
I ordered 25 layers from them and was sent 27, all alive and happily chirping. Of the seven I kept (split the order with someone), one is a rooster unfortunately, but the other six were healthy and happy. Sold one at five weeks and now have one pretty specimen of five different breeds. Can't...
I ordered 25 layers from MPC and was sent 27 Split the order with someone and kept seven, one of which is definitely a rooster I don't know if they send extras on smaller orders, but they did with 25! All of them were alive and happy after two days in the mail.
What has happened with this? My folks live in Oneida Co. and their neighbor regularly raises cornish, 50 or so every summer. I wouldn't bring attention to yourself, just keep on keeping on.
Mypetchicken doesn't sell "production reds" or "red sex link" breed chickens...? If you guys don't think they are EEs, I will post to the general ID thread. Thanks for all your help!
edited to say: I see that mypetchicken does indeed sell Red Stars which are sex-link. So perhaps you did ID...
Thanks for the advice so far. My chicks were light yellow as day-olds, and they don't have any darkening on their feet at 2-1/2 weeks, and not super fluffy cheek feathers, but they sure look like EEs otherwise, so pictures:
Kristin just a couple days old
Sunshine just a couple days old
and...
I am trying to identify some of my chicks that came from my pet chicken, and it seems like two of them can only be EEs (yellow chick to start, whitish buff feathers coming in on wings with greyish stripes and red neck and head feathers). However, they both have very yellow legs and toes, no...
My two week old chicks like to climb on my shoulders, which I think is cute, but while they are up there they often peck at my hair and eat strands of it occasionally. Is this bad for them? Should I be concerned?
My suburban area has no specified limits, as long as they don't create smell/noise issues with the neighbors. I highly suspect that my city will adopt the neighboring city's ordinance of max 4 hens, no roos. I have seven two-week old chicks, and they are all supposed to be hens.
My husband I...
I was just outside digging the post holes for my run, and I came quickly to the realization that there was no way I was digging an 18" deep trench all along the fence line to bury the 1/4"x1/4" hardware cloth.
The run will be 8'x12'. My dirt is very hard clay. We have a lot of raccoons in the...
Good to hear all this! My very first chicks come in the mail tomorrow, the next day or the next, so I am full of anticipation! Please keep this thread updated so we can see if your set-up ended up working great or not....
I got a very large cardboard container for free from Home Depot, it has...
