    Incubator position and humidity

Thanks for the reply - I am good then. I am now averaging about 40% as well now that it is getting warmer in the house. Is it ok to let the humidity fluctuate? or do I want to target a number and stick with it?

    Broody and low egg production

Thanks everyone. I mixed in the rooster this weekend and after about 12 hours they seemed to start to get along - boy did he ever take over as the king fast - even miss broody is now out of the box again. So far egg production is low but lets see what a few days brings. No, nobody has molted...

    Broody and low egg production

Hi, Please bare with me I am still new to the chicken thing... I had 8 chickens last year and was getting 7-8 eggs a day when they started laying. I had to give up 3 of the ladies so I have 5 now. However I now only get 1 or 2 eggs a day. What is going on there? I should be at 4-5 a day I...

I just set some araucana eggs last night in a hover bator incubator with an egg turner. I have a few ?'s 1) normally it says to put eggs on their sides in the slots but this unit will not fit them on their side - it looks like you put then in one end or the other - is that right? and which side...

Is it too cold? Do I need to bring them in?

Anyone have any good tips for keeping the coop ventilated while also preserving heat and keeping out the elements? I am up in Maine and it has gotten cold so we have been closed up and the air is gettin a bit thin in there. I keep the girls in a garage "one that has no motorized stuff in it"...

When can I let them out to free range & get them to go back in the coo

Ok so you guys were all right. We let them out about 2 hours before sunset. They ran around the yard scratching grass and eating every bug they could. It started getting dark and the ring leader led them all back inside. Good little ladies, we do this every night now, the minute I get home...

Bulb wattage for light in coop

I use a string of off white holiday lights run around in the coop for lighting on a timer - it also helps attract bugs which they like. It comes on at 4am thru 8am - but I also have a window in my coop so they do get light at sun up. I also use a timed heat lamp on cold days to take the chill...

When can I let them out to free range & get them to go back in the coo

Great advice all, I plan on letting them out tonight about an hour before sundown so we can test what happens and all of us can be around to keep an eye on them. I am thinking I need a hug butterfly net to catch them LOL - and probably a drink afterwards. I can just see me now chasing...

    Another New Guy

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Another tip I learned from someone locally. I froze cooked rice, water and a splash of orange juice in mini ice cube trays and gave to the ladies a a treat on hot days- they approved in a big way. They all grabbed one and ray away with them.

    Another New Guy

Thanks all, I like all the ladies, the rocks and wyndolettes are not nearly as friendly but the buffs are very sweet and will spend lap time. The Aracuanas are my favorite, a bit pushy, inquisitive, and I love the tufted faces, they also have a different voice then the others. Next project is...

When can I let them out to free range & get them to go back in the coo

Another thought also, Half of my neighbors also have chickens and they are all free range - they all come to my yard all day long to feed in my fields - they seem to be aggressive towards my little ones who fluff up against the coop to try to be tough. Will these visitors create a problem for...
