Hi Clinton, Indian ringnecks make excellent pets. We hand raised ours from 18 day old chicks . That seems to be the best way to ensure that they will be tame with you and not nervous. i find your next question somewhat unusual! I have never held them upside down!! They are extremely intelligent...

Chickens and compost bins - do they go together?

Thanks for your posts everyone. I'm trying to multitask with the veg scraps for feeding and then the leftovers being worked over into great compost. With Spring almost here now, I'm looking forward to a productive few seasons in the veg garden. The compost should be excellent.

In my chicken coop I have built a 2 x 1 square meter compost heap with star pickets and wire. Into it I place all of their veg and fruit scraps from the fruit shop. They eat and scratch in the heap. Is this safe for them as they do scratch into the scraps that have started to break down and...

Finish this sentence: "You know you're addicted to chickens when..."

When you leave a daily bin at the local fruit store and go there every day, rain hail or shine just to pick it up for them. When you open the lid and are so excited at the contents - just like opening Christmas presents.

    How to feed eggshells?

I put my shells in a bowl and smash them up with the wooden spoon. Then I add them to their feed. Is there a problem in not letting them dry out as others do? They eat them all up this way and no problems with eating their eggs.
