We have 6 Rhode Islaand Red hens and we absolutely adore them! We get 6 beautiful, healthy brown eggs a day and we spoil them rotten! They come running as soon as they know we are near to the back yard. They chatter alot and amuse us with their interaction with one another. Each one has a...

Our coop sits on a cement slab. We can move the coop, scrub down the slab, and replace it when necessary. We absolutely love our 6 RIR hens. They were given to me as a gift when they were only about 3 weeks old and they have totally changed our lives. My son is on disability and lives with me so he takes care of them while I'm at work and they come running when they hear his voice. They think we...

    Scabs on combs?

A couple of our chickens have little round "scabs" on their combs. It has been unseasonably hot this year and I'm wondering if this something to do with it. Does anyone have any ideas or comments? Thanks!

In your experince, do dogs help keep away predators???

I wouldn't trust a dog with my chickens either. We had 100 chickens when we livedin Oklahoma, and all of them were killed by our dog. Once a dog gets the taste of chicken, they become a chicken killer. My husband at the time was so upset that he killed our dog and her pups. It was not a...

Nutrition makes a BIG difference!! - PICS ADDED 09/02

I really appreciate your post because I wasn't aware giving them the feed with corn would make such a difference! I have 6 Rhode Island Red Hens about 7 months old and we are collectin 7 eggs a day now. The hens are pretty tame and very healthy, so I guess we are doing okay with them. One...
