    Bent neck on new duckling

Had an Ancona ducking hatch overnight. It’s all fluffed out, but it’s neck is bent so far back it always has its bill pointed straight up. Never had one like this before. I put the eggs in the incubator about 3 days ago, after mama abandoned the nest for a few days. I suppose they got chilled...

    Very odd hatch

The one in the front is a week old. Little buddy that hatched yesterday is in the back. I did give him a little sugar water and they have feed and vitamin water now.

    Very odd hatch

I had one duckling hatch out of a batch in a borrowed incubator. It's not working well, but that's not the issue. This ducky pipped at day 28. only very slight change by day 30, so I made the hole bigger. He was very weak so I finally rolled him out. There was no blood, so I figured he had...

    Incubating duck eggs

We put a few of the old eggs in the incubator just to try it out, it seems they do roll in the outer circle, but not the inner one. I'll save that for chicks later. (Harris 360)

    Incubating duck eggs

Anconas. Planning on putting 12-14 in, depending on how many I get. I have 3 females, so we usually have 3 eggs per day. They are so pretty. And nobody mistakes them for wild!

    Favorite Incubator?

Has anyone used the Harris 360 Nurture rite? How do you like it? Does it truly need to be in a 75 degree room to work properly? My house is about 68 degrees! What other ones work well?

    Incubating duck eggs

Great, thanks. Wish us luck. They will be going in, in about a week. Had started a batch in the old incubator, but the temp was too erratic and we couldn't fix it. Saving up new eggs.

    Incubating duck eggs

Just got a new incubator. My duck eggs are a bit too large for the automatic turner. How often do they need to be turned manually?

    Incubator died overnight!

Thanks ChickenCanoe! Got the new incubator running, waiting for the temp to stabilize. Took the infrared away, it was about 102 at top of eggs. Don't know how warm they got on the inside. They were under it for about an hour. Just covered them with towels now till the new one is ready...

    Incubator died overnight!

The heat in the incubator quit overnight. We are 5 days from hatch with 5 duck eggs and 9 chicken. (chickens were added after a week so they would all hatch at about the same time.). The temp was down to 70 when I got up this morning. I have my infrared heater on them about the right temp now...

Kindest way to put down an injured bird

One of our hens got frozen feet. Happened last year, too. Only this hen and she lost her claws. Must have a circulation problem because it was only this bird. The others are ok. Lots of nice fluffy bedding and wide roosts. Anyhow, this year they froze part way up the leg even with all that...

    Winter care and feeding

Thanks We have a heated bucket that the ducks used to have. That should suit them. I will have to find a bale or 2 of hay for them besides their pellets and corn I guess. Do they need greens like lettuce or kale during the winter?

    Winter care and feeding

Well, my husband got too attached to the 3 gray/toulouse geese to butcher them, sooooo, What do they need in terms of housing and feed for the winter? They have had kiddie pools and a lot of grass all summer. Fed them pellets and corn on the assumption of Christmas dinner, lol. They live in a...

    Medicated feed for poults?

That's true, huh, never thought of it diluting the meds. Maybe I'll just stick to the high protein stuff for both till I separate them outdoors.

    Medicated feed for poults?

Thanks! I did some reading around on here and found out the amprolium won't hurt anybody. I don't like to medicate unnecessarily either, but we have had a cocci outbreak---it was awful. I will feed the medicated stuff for a while, mixed in a little so the protein level stays high, and then...

    Medicated feed for poults?

My poults will hopefully be hatching this weekend. I have some 27% protein feed for them, but was wondering if the medicated chick feed would hurt them if it got mixed. I will also have new chicks this weekend. I know you aren't supposed to give ducklings the medicated stuff, I've not heard...

Sexing two to seven day old Turkey Chicks

Good tips, I was wondering, too. Has anybody noticed a size difference between the males and females at a very young age? Mine should be hatching tomorrow. I want to save a couple toms and sell the rest.

    Aggressive Tom

I am going to have to remember the umbrella trick. Maybe it will work on roosters, too! So far my Royal Palm Tom (Frank) is tame enough to pick up. He's 2 years old, so I don't anticipate trouble anymore, but I don't put up with much, either. I like the idea of the lady facing him down and...

Crossing a Runner and a Khaki Campbell

It will be interesting if I decide to hatch some. Mama has never really shown an interest in setting. Ducks are sort of a messy pain, but they are just too cute as babies. We shall see how brave (?) I feel closer to spring. Thanks for the input.

Crossing a Runner and a Khaki Campbell

We have tightened the house with more hardware cloth. Hard to keep them out of the creek, but we lock them up at night and would keep them locked up when little.
