So, I have had great luck with Easter Eggers, I've had three and they lay right through the Calif winter, short molt and are really friendly. Australlorp and red star are great layers too in addition to being very friendly. I've had three white leghorns, they are prolific layers, but are not...
Before I had my rooster, I lost 3 hens to hawks. My Salmon Faverolle roo is very protective and alert..always running around making sure his girls are all ok.
I love my "Captain"!
So, I like to add dried mealworms and raisins to regular scratch mix from the feed store, but I want to start making my own scratch from scratch..lol!
So am I to understand whole corn and steele cut oats are ok to use? Any other seeds/grains that are nutritionally sound for my flock?
Although I do have a large coup/run for my flock, my husband bought for me the little coup/run combo from Costco and it is perfect as a brooder and for mama to raise babies! After yo put it together you can place it over a pre-framed perimeter made from concrete or brick to keep chickies safe...
Has anyone ever bred a Salmon Favorolle with a White Leghorn? Interesting, right?
I have one BIG Roo (SF) and I have been saving the fertile eggs from my Leghorn..My Australorp has gone broody and I'm
going to have her hatch them. They should be pretty! Hope their good layers as well!
Anyone?
I have one Buff in my flock (Buffy) of course. She is such a love! she lets me pet and hold her all the time! I highly recommend for a great pet for kids!
I keep oyster shell available to my hens full time and they seem to really like it, I do need to refill from time to time. I also supplement their feed with ultra egg. Your chicks will be fine.
Chickens love scratch, so I add dried mealworms and small sunflower seeds to it. Also, you can slice cucumbers or zucchini lengthwise, they love it!
Apples, with seeds removed, grapes and blueberries too.
Normally, chickens will return to their coop at dusk. You can train your chichs with treats. When I go outside I start singing, "chickie chickie chickies" and I can see and hear them getting excited, when I get to their pen I either let them out and throw them scratch or throw it in the run...
Yeah, I have nine older hens and a rooster..I need to add two young pullets to the mix, they are about 12 weeks old and I let them all free range daily, but the young ones stay off to themselves. Additionally, I have a hen that's gone broody and I need to put her in the pen where the young ones...
Ok, so I had a broody hen and I gave her two chicks to raise. At about four weeks I introduced her back t the flock and everyone has ben picking on her. It's been four weeks since i put her back with my flock including one rooster, the hens no longer pick on her, but my rooster mates with her ALL...
You are so right! theres only one roo in the mix, an SV. Yeah, I kinda figured they shorted me on the GLW. Poo! I'll enjoy all my babies anyway! Thanks so much for your reply!
This is a mix if Salmon Favorolles, and Buff Orps, but there should be one Red Sex Link, one Brown Leghorn and one Golden Laced Wyandotte included..Can any identiy any of the 3 single breeds in my mess of photos? I think I didn't get a GLW.
