My coop is made of USB, with one coat of exterior paint on it, and has lasted 15 years..and that's in Michigan, and was abandonded (SP?) for 10, covered in high weeds and critters living in it. It's held up just fine...so anyone who is looking for a cheaper altertinative on a tight budget, don't...
Very cute girls! I also have a non bearded silkie, named Minnie and a couple bearded silkies..My rooster does have the same comb as your buffie, so don't be suprised if you don't find any eggs.
Pretty girls, If I can get my camera to work I may have to show off some of mine( Promise I would...
I have been thinking about what new breeds I would like to dabble in-So I thought I would make this contest to see all the pretty ladies out there.
I will choose the prettiest lady (from my unproffesional opinion) and will contact you through PM to get you your prize...

Does anyone know if security lightd actaully work in scaring off predators? I thought about mounting one to the outside of the coop...but dont want to waste my time.
Wow! ridgeRunner...Thanks for all that info! That is ust about everything I wanted to hear, and have been searching for on the internet. My girls do seem happy, and they make me happy...So I won't change anything. Thanks everyone!
From my experience-When it turns dark, my chickens arent moving anywhere. I am a new chicken owner, but I am pretty sure they cant see in the dark, I've had to run out in rain storms grabbing chickens that didnt make it in the coop before dark
Woops, other part of my question was if my chickens had a litter/sand/dirt floor in their run, would they suffer nutrionally from not being able to free range?
Right now I have 5 chickens, and have had about double in my "run" (fenced in area where the coop sits in the middle) and grass is growing in most areas, along wih high weeds that was hard to keep up with this summer. I have been reading about the deep litter method, and wanted some thoughts.

How sad, reading this all I thought was "Crap, I gotta go get some sand"-All that poop gets to me, Now I can clean it up, just will have to bed the boxes down heavily with straw to keep them warm.
Great Idea, I have been using the dishpan's....maybe I should cough up the money and find those cubes- Do they fit in there snug enough to not tip over? My girls are constantly tipping over their tub's.
I am new to this site, and this will be my first winter with chickens. I cam across a thread where someone mentioned choosing breeds that do well in your climate.
So here is my dumb question, What breeds wwould do well in a Michigan climate, and any breed advocates want to tell me more about...
