Last summer, I froze water in two-liter soda bottles. I laid the frozen bottles in the run for the girls to lay beside. I also fed them very cold watermelon. Finally, I sprayed the run area with water so that their feet were muddy and cool. I've considered a wading pool for this summer...
My one year old silkie hen just died. I found her writhing and convulsing. The tightened muscles in her neck caused her neck and head to twist into all sorts of odd (and scary) positions. I have not made any changes in her living environment other than the fact that I added a rooster to the...
Thanks. I was concerned about the medicated starter for mom. I have never heard about apple cider for chicks but that, too, is a great suggestion. I found this post concernin the ACV: http://keeping-chickens.me.uk/what-to-keep-in-stock/apple-cider-vinegar. It's crazy how excited I am about...
Two broody hens hatched out three eggs today! Yay! (I actually skipped around the yard!) If I give the babies Chic Medicated Starter Feed, can the mama hens eat that, too? Or, do I have to feed them separately? Do the babies need a medication in their water? What about Marek's disease...
Thanks for the response. Yes, I separated her and kept an eye on her. She seems fine. When I looked closer, it looked like she had diarrhea on the outside of her feathers, like it came from another bird rather than herself. She came from a very crowded pen. All the guineas are doing great now.
I purchased ten five-week-old guineas today. One of them has diarrhea with a very strong, fowl smell. Is it a disease? If so, will she infect the rest of the flock?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
I just read that section about being permanent carriers. I've got four Rhode Island Reds outdoors that I can't infect. Ummm, I need to face a harsh reality and would appreciate the input. Two of them are obviously sick and I don't have accommodations to keep them separate. Do I have any...
Hi Laree -
I didn't think that one of the chicks would last through the night but she pulled through. However, I am fairly certain that she is blind in both eyes. She seems more alert this morning and she is drinking. The other chick seems to be doing well, but lost one eye. This is...
Thank you for the response. This is my first batch of baby chicks. Hindsight, I realize that they were sick when I got them. I'm afraid that they are already blind in one eye. Is that typical for a respiratory issue?
I brought home four 3-week old Americauna chicks. I now know that they were sick when I bought them. One died during the first night. Now, two of them have eye problems. Chick #1 has an eye that is completely swollen shut. Chick #2 has one eye that is glazed over (looks blind) and the other...
