    how to get hard eggs

There is a section of this forum for Guinea Fowl. You might check there for someone in your area that might have some eggs. My Guineas have quit laying for the year or I would send you some eggs.

    how to get hard eggs

Do the rules specify that it has to be a chicken egg? Have you thought about using a Guinea egg? Their shells are a lot tougher to break than a chicken egg. A guy I bought hay from once was telling me his daughter had to do this same project. She used a Guinea egg and it didn't break...

Photos*** Who's teeth make this mark?

It looks like squirrels to me. I have them all over the top of my feed bins as well. Little tree rats get up on my enclosed porch and try to chew into the cans. So far they haven't gotten in, but I know it's a matter of time. I used to have my feed in metal cans they couldn't get into but in...

Finally! That cat won't get anymore of our chickens

We have a large live trap. Once the cat was in the trap, a .22 does wonders. I used part of the chicken that the cat had gotten but didn't kill. The chicken was hurt bad enough to have to be put down so I figured it was justice to use it for bait to trap the thing that caused it to die.

Finally! That cat won't get anymore of our chickens

It's a full sized bobcat. Measured 26 inches from ears to base of tail. We didn't weigh it, but he was heavy. Probably because he was full of chicken. It's been coming around for over a month now. But at least now he won't get anymore of my chickens.

Finally! That cat won't get anymore of our chickens

We caught this guy Saturday. He has tormented and taken at least 3 of our chickens, two within the last week, but no more. Trap is set again hoping to catch his mate.

    Mystery death

Mkeawsh, do you move your night guards around or leave them in the same place? I have these on both my chicken pen and turkey pen, as well as in the garden and it hasn't kept anything out that seriously wanted to get in.

    Tip On Storing your Feed!

Be careful storing feed in metal cans in the hot summer. The metal will get hot, can cause feed to ruin, or cause condensation and let feed mold. That is the problem I had this past summer so I switched to 'critter proof' plastic trash cans that are round with screw on lids. The downside is...

    Nite Guard HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have Nite Guards all around my pens and I've still had coons and 'possums come in after my chickens. I also put some on the tomato cages in my garden to keep deer out. The deer tore down the cage that had the Nite Guard hanging on it!

We have our first predator... Opussum

I use peanut butter in my traps. Catches possums and coons.

I hate raccoons! They have moved in full time determined to have chicken and duck snacks!

I feel your frustration Skillswife, I hate those masked bandits too. They are so cute but oh so destructive! I've had really good luck catching (and dispatching) coons in my live trap using peanut butter. Take an empty small catfood can, poke holes in it, run wire thru and wire that to the...

I feel horrible!!! Was it right? Was it wrong? IS there a right answer?

Exactly! I had a possum show up in the afternoon at the waterers that are on the outside of my pens for the Guineas. By the time I went in to get the .22 and came back out it was under the porch looking all innocent. I shot it anyway as I've SEEN what they will do to chicks. It would only...

    mixing flock

How old are the older hens? I've always had good luck putting 'new' chickens in the coop with others if I do it at night. Simply quietly place the new girls on the roosts with the others. In the morning they all wake up together and most usually no one is the wiser as chickens can't count so...

Need advice for my Silkie Rooster

I have a Silkie Roo that does this same thing. If I have jeans on I don't care as he can't hurt me, but if I have shorts or capris on he scratches. I took to carrying a lightweight broom in with me. If he decides to be fiesty then I put the broom between us and he can get fiesty with that...

Can a chicken have a concussion? Will he survive?

That's about all we can do. I'm hoping that by putting him in the little pen where he can't be pestered by the others he will just rest and heal. He has plenty of water and feed close by so he doesn't have to move around much if he doesn't want to.

Can a chicken have a concussion? Will he survive?

Last night as it was getting dark, my husband went to put one of the little Cornish pullets up on the roost as she won't get up there herself. She prefers the fence rail but we can't let her sleep there as a coon would surely get her. Anyway, when he set the pullet on the roost it startled one...

    What predator is this?

Sounds like a coon to me. I had one get one of my chicks thru the fence and the only thing missing was the head, neck and feet.

    Chicken Integration

I've always had good luck adding new chickens in with my older ones if I do it at night after everyone has gone to roost. Simply quietly take the new ones in and sit them on the roosts in the dark or with a red light if needed. In the morning everyone wakes up, goes out and no one is the...

    Solar Nite Eyes Pedator Protection

I have 6 Night Guards around two of my chicken pens. I've tried moving them to different areas, leaving them where they are for long periods of time, and moving them higher /lower and to date they haven't stopped a raccoon or opossum. However my large trap does wonders for catching the coons...

Made a mistake re nest boxes

I have 3 Welsummers that wanted to sleep in the nest boxes when I first got them. I would go out after dark and move them to the roosts and they would stay there for the night. It took a couple of weeks, but now they go up on the roosts on their own. You might try moving your girls and see...
