I have raised Wyandottes for many years. I’ve have had Colombians, Silver, Gold, and now I have a flock of Blue Laced Red. They are all a docile, dual-purpose breed. I keep them for their medium sized pale brown or tan eggs and for meat. Wyandotte hens make great setters and are devoted mothers...
I read that a large chicken should eat about 1/4 pound of chicken feed a day. I'm guessing that guineas, ducks, and geese would require more than a 1/4 pound. I only have a small flock of 12 BLR Wyandottes. My chickens free range and i keep feed out for them all day long. They can all get at it...
Bought this Sears, Roebuck & Co. Brooder (Model # 595) for $5.oo at an auction. I want to restore it back to working condition. The electrical wires have all been removed. I know nothing about it but I’m guessing that the light on the outside of the brooder was wired with the heating element to...
BLRWyandotte~ Good luck on your chicks! When I ordered, all McMurray sold was St.Run chicks in the BLR.
As I mentioned I ordered 6. They sent me 4 female & 2 male. Hope your ratio of female to male
is as good or better than mine. I'm very pleased...
Mine did the same thing. I plugged my light into an outlet that is controlled by a light dimmer switch. I was using a 60 watt bulb and with the switch I dimmed it down to what I’m guessing was about 50 watts. The light started cycling back on & off and held a steady temperature
Has anyone ordered Blue Wyandottes from them?
I haven't been able to find to much out about them or their birds.
Anyone had bad or good experience when ordering from Strombergs?
I received my order of Wyandottes, 35 of them, on 1/30/12 for McMurray.
Had one DOA in the box when I opened it. Had 8 die within the first 48 hours.
I have not lost any chicks after the 48 hour time period.
The remaining chicks are healthy and growing well.
You call the hatchery at the end...
At the moment, I have 3 chicks that I hatched out on 1/21/12 in the brooder.
On 1/30/12 I have 34 chicks due to arrive from McMurray Hatchery.
5-Columbian Wyandotte females
3-Golden Laced Wyandotte males
10-Golden Laced Wyandotte females
3-Silver Laced Wyandotte males
7-Silver Laced Wyandotte...
These are the results of my first time incubation.
I set 10 eggs. There was 100% fertility and 40% hatched.
Looks like one quit around day 13. Five quit on day 18.
I culled one because it had badly curled toes on one foot.
My records show that I candled on day 13 and I removed
the eggs...
I read in an old book about raising poultry that a large sized fowl could handle twenty chicks.
They would put the hatch of one hen with the hatch of another hen and let her raise them so the other hen could be put into the laying house and back into egg production.
If it was summer time, I...
