This situation was me about 20 years ago. I moved to a small farm house next to a subdivision. I have always lived in the country and always had horses. The first week we started building fence. Neighbors seemed friendly and very inquisitive about the fence. We told them that my Horse was being...
I have had 2 Barred Rock Roos and both of them have turned mean. I raised the first one and
at the beginning he was very gentle. He liked being around me; then he became a horrible boy. He protected his hens well but I couldn't trust him around my grand children or even me if I turned my back on...
Thanks for all your good input. I was just sure if I handled him and made him understand that I am not going to hurt his girls or him that he would eventually calm down. He was afaid of my maltese dog yet aggressive toward me...don't figure.
I had bought 25 pullets (Barred rocks) and they threw an extra one in. Of course, (this one was a rooster..didn't know). At the beginning I thought I found a nice little hen that maybe I could make a pet of. This chick would always come to me and I would hold it, feed it and let it outside in...
I have 25 barred rock hens and 1 roo....not all of them have names....only the ones I can tell apart. Some I can tell by there personalities.
Babe Ruth (rooster) Was Baby until he turned into a roo.
Crazy Kate; I believe she is off....the girls don't even buddy up with her.
Rose; she has...
My Barred Rock roo's cone has black aroung the edges where the hens peck at him. I'm not sure why they do this; but he seems to let them. He is very protective of them and can be alittle aggressive......so I don't think he is being a wimp. Has anyone ever seen this behavior?
Thanks for the info on the roo. My pullets are 3 months old.
I think I will wait. I guess my mom new what she was talking about:cool:
I'm located about 17 miles from Terre Haute Indiana to the East. I am getting very attached to my little girls; thats for sure!

I have 26 Barred Rock pullets, and have been looking for a young roo to go with them.
I am fairly new to this experience, so i'm not sure where to look. I have been told that it isn't quite time to purchase one yet....what is your opinion.
