Once you refrigerate them, they must continue to be refrigerated. Refrigerated, they will keep for months, but who would want to? I keep mine on the counter, but they are usually eaten or given away within a couple of days.
I don't wash mine - the nest boxes are clean. If I get a dirty one...
Well it's hot here, and during a molt you're lucky to get any eggs at all, even soft or shelless. It sounds like you're doing everything right - my 2 SS are off their lay now and one apppears to be molting as well.
If your chickens are not on medication, the eggs are edible right away. Sometimes the first couple of eggs are tiny with no yolks ("fart" or "fairy" or "wind" eggs, but you'll see this as soon as you crack them. Sometimes as your hens get the hang of laying, the eggs are soft-shelled, malformed...
The heat here has caused 4 of my 6 to stop laying. I mist them, provide them with a pan of ice but they are miserable. Our heat should break a bit this week, but I am trying to keep them alive and comfortable and not worrying too much about the eggs.
We live in Southetn California where water is dear. When we first bought our mid-century modern tract home, we put in a beautiful, drought tolerant desert garden out front, complete with rock swale and beautiful flowering plants and cactus.
Code Enforcement drove by and cited me for "weeds" -...
Keep them fenced against predators (dogs, etc.) perhaps you can fence them to just the back yard as you seem to be in a suburban area. If you are rural, then you still must consider predators, if not neighbors. It's lovely to watch them peck around - but their safety must be considered. I love...
I kept my broody Sussex in the wire cage (with food & water, no bedding) for four days - allowing her out to range for an hour or so in the run if she wanted and it 4 days to break her of broodiness. She hasn't stopped laying snce! And she's still very affectionate toward me (you know, for a...
Use a bit more sweet pdz - I find I need to toss a lot of it in my run - I get some real stinky-ness when the cabbage my chicks love decomposes in this heat! We have a mister system in one corner, too, so stuff gets wet and then heats up some. Couple that with chick poo and wow. So I rake out...
I am the Chicken Feeder, Protector and Substitute Rooster. I am the Mommy, the Daddy, the Main Squeeze. I am the Hand that Pets, the Voice that Clicks, clucks, softly sqwawks and murmurs soothing noises. I am the One Who Watches, Bringer of Treats and Toys. I am the Taker of Eggs, Inspector of...
I'm a veteran, too.
I love to read all the conflicting opinions here. And I love to see the activism that springs from people just wanting to have their own version of peace and plenty, whether it be backyard chickens or other things. And I'm always aware that my freedom to swing ends at...
This is rational - try it first.
Also, strengthen the coop/run against ALL predators.
Finally, if all else fails, shoot the sumbitch and his dog. Okay, maybe too extreme, but it is your property, your chicks, and your feelings/peace of mind. The uncle sounds like an idiot. Who needs more...
I swear by the wire-cage-and-dunk-their-butts-in-cold-water method to break broodiness! Took me 4 days to break a stubborn Speckled Sussex!
Got 5 out of 6 laying like crazy now, even in the heat!

All chickens scratch and are destructive to plantings - it's what they do! And it's part of their charm.
I would either keep them in your generous pen - or if you need to, build a larger one. If you have level pasture, you might consider a moveable "chicken tractor" for them.
You won't find...
You may consider giving them away to someone who will eat them. We intend to keep ours as pets for their lives, but we know of places in our area that will process them for meat if we wish it. We know they live healthy, happy lives, and we are grateful for their eggs, but we know they will not...
I pick up our eggs daily from the nestboxes - but if they've been out a couple of days, the only danger is that a hen may go broody and want to sit the nest. The eggs will keep out there - even in warm weather, at least several days. Any longer than that and they are at risk of getting cracked...
