The little ones should be in the brooder with a light for a few more weeks. When they are feathered you can move them to a separate enclosure within your other birds coop. This way they can interact and become accustomed to one another yet the littles will be safe from the bigs.
We just picked up some new chicks and one has an extra toe. Doesn't seem to be causing any problems so far. Should we do anything with it or just leave it be?
I don't know when to start clipping, but my 4-6 chicks can each fly at least ten feet horizontally. not sure if they could get the height, but certainly wouldn't take long one they figure It out...
last night update -- I herded the chicks to under the coop at dusk. they were less resistant this time- yeah! they put themselves into the coop and at like 11, I realized I hadn't closed their pop door so went out to do that and found nobody had roosted. They don't...
thank you for the advice! They all had roosts in their brooders, in the run and in coop, of course. They play on them, and some sleep on them.
Last night I was about 20 minutes too late to herd them under the coop to go up the ladder/ ramp. They were NOT happy to be...
Ok. tomorrow I will keep their food in the coop only. I've been feeding both in and out. I'm going to go herd them in to the under-coop enclosure soon. see if from that close proximity to the coop, they'll put themselves to bed.
so, is the consensus a lil cockerel on that...
I have 12 pullets, from 4 - 6 weeks old. I'm wondering if one of my RIR's is a Roo...
With his(?) leading lady.
How do I teach them to go to roost in the coop at night? I'm unplugging their light during the day because it's been 95*+ and they choose to spend their...
Why didn't someone tell me how addicting raising chicks was? Lol! Lots of cute babies. and now so hard to resist more at feed store.
some of them as wee tiny babies - just one month ago!
I am just sick to my stomach.
We have had our broody BO setting on a clutch that is set to hatch on Tuesday & Wednesday. A few days ago, the BO had taken up residence in an empty nestbox next door to her eggs and her eggs were cold to the touch. I thought it was a lost cause at that point, but...
My 13 mo old Buff has been holding fast to her nest box for 8 days today. It took me until now to round up fertile hatching eggs locally. It was cute - I went out the coop this morning, petted her and she got all sqeaky and fluffed up. She didn't try to peck or get nasty which I was a little bit...
Interesting. I haven't seen that with any of our hens yet, but have seen it multiple times in store bought eggs. I always thought that those eggs with a blood spot were the beginnings of a chick and it super icked me out. I now realize that that thought is rather silly, as standard store bought...
I set a food and water dish in front of the box yesterday (the nest boxes are level to the floor of our raised coop). This morning she had changed to the next nest box over to set on the RIR's egg instead of the dummy egg - smart girl, lol! I took her out and walked her over the outside feeder -...
My BO hen has been setting in the nest box for the last two days, only out for a quick minute. She had her egg and a plastic egg under her when I collected eggs last night. She didn't get nasty with me when I reached under her, but was all fluffed out like she was trying to keep her little...
I really want to know what eggs are coming from which chickens. I can't be checking the boxes every ten minutes to see which hen is in and what kinda egg is behind - not that I haven't tried, but I always seem to miss it and by the time I check again then there are two eggs, lol... Does anybody...
