I have trolled the boards and see a few threads on loss in egg production, but I thought I'd start my own. I have 13 hens and was getting about 12 eggs a day in April, May and most of June, now for the last few weeks I am getting as few as 4 a day. I have one girl who has been broody for about...
I have no idea how many are under her. that box usually has 4-6 eggs most days.... I don't how many were there when she took over that box! I will wait a few days and see what she does, we have no roosters so the eggs have no chance to hatch! Will the eggs be good to eat if they stay in the...
oh WOW! she puffed up real big and tried to take off my hand when I reached in at her! I am saying she broody! How can I get her out of there with out losing a hand!
She is just laying there is the same position, eyes open and moving. I have not tried to move her yet, her vent does not seem to be pulsing at all. I shall try to move her and see what her reaction is.
I have 14 hens and last night when I went out to feed the girls one would not move out of a nesting box? They are all about 14 months old bought and raised together, and I have not had any get sick before, thankfully! I entered the coup last night and this one stayed in the box as I fed them...
How much is too much startch? They may get 3-6 pieces of bread that my kids feed them a day, 5-6 days a week we have 16 hens. I assume the grower has some startch. I have scratch of sunflower and safflower seeds they get maybe a cup of this tossed out 2-3 times a week.
Will hens eat less in hot weather? Or has my increase in table scraps decreased thier interest in the feed? They are eating about 2/3 of the amount of grower than they were 3 weeks ago. It June and 85-90 almost everyday. Their water drinking has not changed. I have seen threads here on this...
so how much should my girls getting fed and how often? I am feeding them twice a day, and basically if the food is gone I feed them more... any guidelines out there, btw they are only 3 days old!!
I ordered our chicks from Mt. Healhy Hatcheries, and they were great! I had set my ship date for today, hoping they would arrive tomorrow or Tuesday. Well they cam today! I have give it to my local post office, the lady there called me directly, she said couldn't stand to think the chicks...
Alright, my girls are set to ship tomorrow, shoudl be here by Tuesday at the latest, I have the brooder box built(almost comlete, just have to have the top finished up. Then I am ready to put in the liter/bedding. I am finding many posts here that say cedar and pine shaving are bad.... so what...
So I have only seen one or two mentions of Gro-gel, or a like product. How important is Gro-gel or an electrolyte?? BTW we ordered our chicks, they ship March 4th-ish!!
I am going to build a simple box to use as my brooder, and I have read here that the best source of heat is lights.... now my chicks will be in my garage, and this March when they arrive the temp can range from the teens at night to 60's in the day, yes good old Indiana weather. My questions is...
How high do you start the boxes out off the ground? Would it work to have a series of boxes starting at say a foot off the ground, then some at 3, then 5 foot off the ground? do you use staw or those mats they sell? how many boxes for how many hens? if I have 15 hens how boxes would be enough??
Anyone build their own nesting boxes? I am planning out my coop and need to keep things as economical as I can, I plan to pretty much build everything after converting my shed into the coop. Any designs or pics appreciated.
We are going to make the plunge this spring (April-ish) on getting our first flock (I had chickens as a kid) and was wondering what feed to have ready when they arrive?
Hello all,
First I have truly enjoyed reading all the advice on here for the past couple of weeks while I was lurking be fore I joined. It looks like this is THE site for other backyard flock raising folks! I am a newbie for the most part, when I was a child we raised 6 hens, too roos and 2...
I too am a newbie, and I have pretty much the same questions about breeds, I have 5 kids from 9 to 2 years old, who will all be our "helpers" in raising the flock. A frind of mine who has a flock of 17 hens has Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds and Aracaunas, and suggested...
