I have 8 guinea hens and one guinea cock on less than an acre. I live in a residential neighborhood. I share a backyard with two other neighbors, so together, the guineas have free run of 3/10ths of an acre. Some things I have done to keep them contained is to clip wings from the time they...
I have 5 ducks, 2 males (1 saxony, 1 ancona), and 3 females (2 ancona, 1 saxony). Prior to about a month ago, I've never had any problem with the males overbreeding or pestering the females too much. Then, about a month ago, one of the female anconas was attacked by a dog. She was injured...
Thank you for all the suggestions. I have added a couple of containers with dirt and grit in them for the quail to play in, and some hay for them to scratch around in. They seem to like the additions.
What is an easy way to up the protein? I am only raising these for about 3-4 more weeks...
Coloration of feathers and legs is female. However, in the first pic it looks like you can see some saddle feathers coming down before the tail. So maybe a female colored male??? Do you know how old? Could you take some more pics of her from the side and from above perhaps?
I have 5 ducks, 3 are female (2 Ancona, 1 Saxony). They were hatched the first week in May, so their right about 25 weeks. I thought they would be laying by now. They certainly mate plenty. Will they not lay until spring since it's so late in the season? Also, their pen is currently being...
I'm growing out 27 quail in a 36 square foot pen. They seem to be constantly plucking at each others back side and backs. Only one or two have any feathers there at all, and they are 8 weeks old. Are they missing something? Are they too crowded? They are fed custom milled 20% broiler feed.
I would say a sex-link, but maybe not red sex-link, maybe an amber link or one of the lighter ones. My red sex-link rooster had much darker coloring, including some black in his tail.
So does the splash blue wheaten cockeral count as a splash for breeding to black? Maybe he isn't really a splash, but he is very light colored.
He is the light blue one with the wheaten head/neck, facing the right side of the picture.
Yes, you certainly do have many roosters from your lines at this house!! So no chance for a blue offspring? I thought the blacks could carry the blue gene, so mixing a Blue Wheaton with a black you might get a blue? I really like the wheatens and the blues, but I only have black hens.
I have Ameraucanas. Roosters are Buff, Blue Wheaton, and Blue Wheaton Splash.
If I cross any of these roosters with my black pullets, what will resultant colors be? Also, I have one silver pullet. Would any of the roosters work with crosses for her, or would everything just be mutt colored?
I do a layer of fresh on top each day, then once a week, clean off the top dirty layers and start the routine over. They are on dirt, so I'm not cleaning to the "floor", just removing the layers that are compacted and obviously soiled.
Did you put any grit with them? When raising large batches, it really helps with pasty butt issues if they have grit, since there is no way to pick up and check each butt everyday like you can with smaller numbers of chicks.
Yes, we raise guineas for eating primarily. They are very good, more flavor than chickens. Their thighs and legs are smaller, but the breast is good size. I don't know if they taste like pheasant since I've never had pheasant.

I was just wondering what type of chicken the black and white laced one is. The one who is larger than the rest. She looks so much like one of my cochins who we think is a mix.
Sorry for hijacking.
Thanks,
Janice
The white and black chicken is a hatchery silver laced cochin pullet...
It is just too early to tell for sure. Do you know what breeds they are? That could help with identifying the sex.
I think the lighter one is a boy, and the darker one a girl, but I'm only 50% sure .
Can you post pics of your so we can see? That would definitely help. I'm inclined to say that no red at all by 5 weeks would mean girls, but pea combs can be notoriously hard to sex, especially early.
