Thanks! I've raised waterfowl (ducks) and chickens. Sounds like the A frame would be simple enough to build, and could put it on skids to move it around. We do have the occasional eagle and some HUGE red-tailed hawks. I'll have to think about some simple shelter in that open area maybe. I think...
She was NOT following that rule "perfectly." And she was not "simply explaining," she was dismissive and rude. Look, we all have only our OPINION and GUESTIMATE to what the breed is. My opinion is no more or less than hers or anyone else's. There was no reason for her to be abrupt. I haven't...
Hi, all. I'm thinking of getting some Buff Geese. I would probably house them separately from my free range chickens and 3 ducks. I've heard these geese are very docile and not as loud as some others.
Recommendations on housing, etc. and where to purchase? What hatchery has the best geese...
Check to see what the bag says. Usually crumble is a layer feed, and yours are too young for that (too much calcium in the feed). Keep them on chick feed until they start laying, then you can switch to layer feed. Another alternative is to feed "all flock" and supplement oyster shell on the side...
I boil mine a bit. They really don't like them overdone (slimy). You could just chop them up raw. They'll eat the seeds, too, but I chop up the stringy part because they can choke on that.
You are so right! I'm sorry, I got my niacin for leg problems mixed up with angel wing. I have 2 ducks now that have angel wing. I've raised many ducklings, and believe it to be genetic (which it can be) Sorry for any misinformation!
I have read that angel wing often occurs with too much...
I'll echo what others have said that it does depend on the breed. Pekins are notoriously calm, while Khaki Campbells and Runners are wild little banshees. It's just their nature. In my experience, ducks in general are less friendly and more "herd-bound" (unless you have Pekin) than most chickens.
One way I marketed my duck eggs (on CL) was with a little blurb about how authentic French bakeries ONLY use duck eggs for baking. They are THE BEST for baked goods. That's a selling point. I sell chicken eggs for $3 and duck for $4 or $5 a dozen. If you get Cayugas, they lay unusual black/gray...
