I am working in a kindergarten classroom and we have about a dozen eggs in the incubator and it is hatching time.
Three chicks have come out of the shell so far, two took only about an hour or two, but one took 28 hrs to come out, and I had to break the last bit of shell off in...
I am building what is basically a chicken run, but this one is to keep vegetables in and everybody else out!
My chickens, dog, rabbits, etc.
But will regular, standard size chicken wire keep out wild birds like house finches and house sparrows?
There's also sesame and since Beavis seems to be letting us get away with some alternative grain ideas

So I just bought some Amaranth seeds, think this would be a good grain to grow to supplement the diet of our chickens, they could even peck at them as they free-range at times.

No there is no light on in the coop at night.
I read somewhere that you may be able to fool the rooster by leaving a light on in the coop until later in the evening. This somehow alters the roosters internal clock and makes them less likely to crow until morning.
He is less than a year old.
The coop has screened "windows" in it. I wonder if I made plywood shutters to close at night if that might settle him down a bit?

Are there any strategies anyone can suggest to help stop my rooster from crowing off and on in the night?
2AM, 3AM, 4AM, there doesnt seem to be any pattern to his crowing....
Yep greens for sure in the Fall/Winter, but for now I need warm weather crops...

I currently have my young chickens in a coop that connects to a chicken run that also connects to a much larger grazing pen.
Currently, they are too small to be out in the larger grazing pen.
I would like to get some vegetables established in the grazing pen before the chickens...
