Chicks hatching in Kindergarten classroom!

Hello all,

I am working in a kindergarten classroom and we have about a dozen eggs in the incubator and it is hatching time.

Three chicks have come out of the shell so far, two took only about an hour or two, but one took 28 hrs to come out, and I had to break the last bit of shell off in order for the chicken to come out.

My question is:

How long is too long before assisting the chicks out of the shell?

Last month I hatched 13 button quail in my classroom. This month we're hatching out chickens (they started hatching today).
I teach Kindergarten - 8th grade. They love it!

I'd like to know the answer to this question also.

It just varies from chick to chick...
It can take a very very long time!
