The hens ignore them. And the hens leave to free-range all day but use the nest inside the shed to lay eggs.
But, yeah, they were inside in their brooder until I put them in a caged off area of the shed. They seemed super eager to get out and the hens were being very laid back, so I took down...
I have five new pulets (7 weeks old or so) who are now bunking with my 5 older hens in the shed that is their coop. But the pullets have been staying in the shed all day every day. It's been almost a week now. I'd like to see them get some fresh air (shed's getting hot during the day now.) Do I...
I have a 4 year-old hen who has been lethargic for a few days. Last night, I noticed her vent area was balding and another chicken was pecking at it.
Assuming it was egg-binding, I've been giving her epsom salt baths and feeding her calcium in a water dropper (Rolaids dissolved in water)...
I want to thank you for reassuring me about roosters. Sure enough, my Penwyn is still the sweet bird he was when I thought he was a she. I've become even more attached to him. Your advice was good.
I'm in my first year raising chickens and I want to see some chickens being shown at local county fairs. It's about that time of year but I can't find any information on the fair for Cherokee County (where I live). Can anyone tell me how to find out when the fair is?
I have come upon a great new name for "Penelope": Penwyn. It's a Welsh name meaning fair-haired or white head. A very appropriate name and I can still call him Penny and Penpen as I have been.
Wow. Yep, my Penny looks just like your roos. I appreciate all the comforting words about roos from everyone here! And here you show me a pic of PR roos hanging out happily together. I didn't think roos would do that. I'm having a rooster attitude adjustment.
Thanks, everyone! I really need to hear good things about roosters right now. I worked so hard to plan and prepare for the chickens and I figured I would give away any that turned out to be roos. But I just don't want to part with Penny. (Guess it's time to pic out a new name for "Penelope".)
Wishing4Wings, you are suggesting a rooster might not develop into a bird so mean and aggressive I need to separate it from the hens? Is it possible this one will be a *sweet* rooster?
This kills me because I'm attached to this one. Could a PR roo be kept with 5 hens? I've made no preparation for this possibility and I really hate to give this one away. What would you do if you were me?
I'm raising my first chickens (a flock of 6 who have been raised together since tiny chicks and all get along wonderfully) and they are now about 16 weeks old. They were all *supposed* to be pullets but I'm now wondering if the one White Plymouth Rock of the bunch (pictured below) is really a...
