Will a hawk return if it didn't get to eat?

I have a very upsetting update. Our chicken coop is plywood with a small (8x8) double hardware encased run. It's completely enclosed, the hardware cloth is buried a foot deep all around to stave off the foxes, racoons etc from digging in. This enclosure has a hardware cloth re-inforced screen...

Will a hawk return if it didn't get to eat?

Thank you for your kind words....After reading the article, we've decided to take down our song bird feeders for a while. That may have very well attracted the hawk hang around our property. We've had very large numbers of finches feeding these past few weeks, in addtion to the usual cardinals...

Will a hawk return if it didn't get to eat?

I lost one of my beloved Pymouth Rock girls at dusk tonight.....caught a hawk on the ground with her that seemed to have broken her neck. She was dead, but the hawk hadn't had a chance to start eating yet when I scared it off. I'm thinking of putting my girls into their coop/fortress about a...

Help! My little BO is sick!

Thanks to all who replied.....If any one had told me a year ago that I would fall in love with chickens, I'd have never believed them. I rank them up there with dogs, cats, horses, goats, and all manner of God's creatures we hold in dear in our hearts. Losing Sandy hurt, but I'll never forget her!

Help! My little BO is sick!

Thanks for your sympathy.......no her wattles didn't turn dark, but her comb looked dried out and flopped to one side (dehydration?). I will keep a close eye on my flock for anything unusual. They all seem normal this morning.

Help! My little BO is sick!

I have a sad update, my little Sandy just died........She wasn't eggbound, had no lice, no lumps anywhere. Isolated her, we're in Fla. where it's 80 today, so cold not a factor. Tried to give her water with a dropper, she seemed to gag on it. Anyway, she's gone and I'm crying....just hope it...

Help! My little BO is sick!

We have three BO and three PR girls, all eight months old. One of the BO's, Sandy, has always been the smallest, always been bottom of pecking order. We finally figured out that she has vision problems after watching her peck at, and miss, food on the ground. She always seemed to get by, though...

Thanks for all the ideas. My husband is now plotting and planning a way to cover our adjoining garden area with overhead chicken wire.

    Need info re: hawks

Thank you everyone! We did have dreams of letting our chickens free range supervised, but apparently we will have to restrict them to fenced areas only. We not only love them as pets, but liked the idea of natural insect control since in FL, we have fleas, ticks, ants, roaches etc., in...

    Need info re: hawks

Our three BO and three PR girls are now 7 weeks old. They've been staying outside in our heavily fortified coop/run for two weeks now. Three times this past week at dusk, when I go inside the fenced run to shut their coop door (an added protection, maybe overkill), I've scared off a hawk that...

Will this coop protect enough against foxes, raccoons, possums, and possibly wild hogs?

Thank you everyone! I thought that it would be hard for a fox to climb that high......guess I didn't decipher the pic well enough to realize it was a coon. The vents at the top do have hardware mesh, it's just hard to see in the picture. We may very well have to resort to an electric fence...

Will this coop protect enough against foxes, raccoons, possums, and possibly wild hogs?

These are our new babies, 3 buffs and 3 barred rocks. Caught this fox last night on the critter cam mounted near the coop. Coop and run are covered on top, sides and buried underground 1" x2" welded wire, with extra layer of hardware cloth on bottom half. Besides the occasional fox, we have...

Comment by 'dumluckcluck' in article 'Deciding To Free Range Your Flock'

Thank you for an informative article that answers lots of my questions. Our 5 acres is surrounded by forest, so foxes, raccoons, and hawks are numerous. Our coop is built like Fort Knox because of this. As soon as my chicks are full grown, we'll let them free range ONLY with supervision! Loved...
