Ill chicken ( Picture attached is pretty gross/graphic)

I have a chicken that is a year old and started showing signs of sickness a day ago. Her vent is hard and crusty almost looks like it is sealing shut. I’ve never seen anything like it. She is eating and drinking, poop is runny. None of my other chickens are ill. I’ve separated her from the...

    Kinda hating Mother Nature today...

Thanks for the well wishes, the boys are troupers and have spent the day "comforting" the hen Henny Penny. Lots of treats for her and the babies. Feeling guilt over killing the snake, not my style but I had hoped to save the baby. Everyone is up and cozy for the night.

    Kinda hating Mother Nature today...

My children and I were sitting in the coop watching our hen with her two week old guinea babies. She and the keets are in a fenced in nursery, we had the top off to feed and water them. A huge, HUGE black snack came in so fast I couldn't do anything to stop it, it went first for the hen and I...

    Rooster question

Thanks. I will wait until they reach laying age to make sure, then start looking for homes. If I do keep a rooster is there info out there that anyone recommends reading to learn about their care. Is it any different than keeping hens?

    Rooster question

Well we got them as an impulse buy because we had always loved the look of the silkie. We have several hens and guineas as well. Never actually thought of breeding them, but now that there are roosters I may in the future. I'm still guessing about the roosters but have seen some of them...

    Rooster question

I got 6 silkies from tractor supply, of course hoping for hens. Looks like I got 4 roosters and 2 hens. The only rooster experience I have was several years ago when our hand raised sweet chicken went nuts and started attacking any human it could. I gave him back to the farmer who gave it to us...

Keet with crooked toe and foot

I have a newly hatched guinea with a crooked toe and it's foot faces in. Anything I can do to fix it? It hatched about 4 today, is eating and drinking on its own but isn't really walking.

    Keet with crooked toe/foot

I have a freshly hatched baby, who struggled for two days to hatch. It's toe is crooked and one foot is pointing in. Anything I can do to fix this? It's eating and drinking fine, socializing with the others fine just not walking well.

9 days till hatch and my hen just left the nest.

I have a nest of 6 eggs and our hen left the nest yesterday and hasn't gone back. There is only 9 days left till hatch date and when I checked them today I know there are live chicks in there. I don't have an incubator, can I hatch them out without one. Don't know why she left the nest, it is...

    Not what I was told...

Yes Lightchick that is what they looked like. I'm not upset about the change in breed just wanted to know what they are. They are very sweet and will be a happy addition to our flock no matter what they are. Right now we have 7 Guineas, two Rhode Island whites and one very spoiled naked neck...

    Not what I was told...

Also if it helps they were completely black as babies, a couple had tiny spots of white under the wing but mostly black.

    Not what I was told...

My son is involved with the 4-H chick chain and all the paperwork says the chicks are Barred Rock hens. They are 8 weeks old. These look nothing like a Barred Rock and I can't get anyone on the phone who knows what they are. Anyone?
