I have been raising hens for almost 3 years now. This last summer the family decided it was time to add to our farm and we bought 2 horses. Now, I want to tell you that our yard is very "chickenized" all the great spots have already been staked out by the free-ranging flock of 25 that we...
This is how it starts... You should read all the posts about chicken math too while you are here. I started out with 5-6 hens... This spring I upped it to 45 hens and when I got back down to 21(last week) I ordered another 25. I also plan on ordering more in the spring but don't tell my family...
I just might have to try that. My roo turned evil a few weeks ago and now my neighbors (who love it when my chickens visit) has asked me to terminate his contract and let him go.... I would much rather find a way to make him more pleasant since last week the entire flock had a run in with the...
I just did an order of 25 Buff Orps and it is supposed to be delivered the 7-10th. I will let you know how it goes once I get them. My spring order was not a very good one since they sent them on one of the coldest days we had last spring and the poor chix sat on the runway in 10 degree weather...
I feel your pain. I have lost 10 of my flock in the last 2 and a half weeks to a fox that just wont go away. I had 31 total and now I have 20 hens and 1 rooster. I am ordering more so that they will be big enough to go outside once the weather gets nice again in the spring (I live in CT). I hope...
You also want them sepperated for a few weeks when you first get a new one anyhow. You want to make sure that the new one is not carrying any sort of virus or sickness. Always remember different farms (while they look the same) have different germs and bugs. It could even be your neighbors house...
Crazy chicken farm. Becuase all my chickens are insanely funny to watch!! Plus my girlfriend thinks I am crazy when I add more chickens each year. (see chicken math...)
Ok... Chicken math..
So I started last year with 25 chicks, my first batch ever, 5 of them did not make it out of the brooder. They were really smalla nd got laid on and squished by the others, so that left me with 20. These 20 made it out of the 4ft by 4ft brooder and into the chicken coops...
How big is your incubator? Can you buy a power converter and load it into the car with you? If so then you can just take it with you and not worry.
Oh, and in case you do not know, a power converter plugs into your car "cigarette" lighter and converts the power over to be used with house hold...
I have one we have named Hudini since she seems to have found a way out of a locked fenced in run each morning to get all the good bugs before the rest of my flock (34 total) are let out to free range each day... You would have thought that sooner or later some of the others would be as...
I had a hen that went broody on me for 3 months. She NEVER came out of the coop. My son would taker her out and she would run right back, We tried locking the coop up on her but then she found an egg to brood on in the hen yard. So, the thing that finally turned her was the good weather. During...
That is pretty funny. All of the littles have found their nitch in with the bigs. Occasionally the bigs will still peck at the littles here and there but now a few of the littles are big enough to think that they can take a step up in the pecking order and will go after one of the bigs. It is...
I usually remove the heat lamp as soon as they have all their feathers and are not gathering under it anymore. Once they have insulation of their own they are pretty much good to go.
I combined all of my chickens for the first time this weekend and started free ranging my 8 week old chiks with...
I will have to prep a jail cell for her then and see if that works. I really do not want to put her down and I do not think that getting rid of her will be the answer either. I do have a freind that has other chickens I wonder if I can put her in his "brooder" section of his coop for the next...
I have a hen that is such a brooder she barely leaves the coop. We have to force her out most days for a few hours and even then she likes to try and peck at the kids as they move her out to the sun. She screams a lot when you take her away from her empty nesting box. What is funny is that she...
