I have both grit and crushed oyster shell available all the time and they get a smal tub of cottage cheese every couple of weeks. Do you think I might be feding too many veggies?

    Sick Hen!?

***Update*** Yesterday morning my hen seemed much better, but yesterday afternoon I noticed her squating again. I noticed a small white "something" poking out of her vent. I thought it might be poop, but she seemed to be really struggling with it. When I caught her it was a soft shell egg...

    Sick Hen!?

Thanks for the link 77horses. I had gloves and vasoline so I probed her vent as far as I could, about two inches or so and didn't feel an egg. I didn't want to hurt her so I was afraid to go in too far. This afternoon her tail is up and she's eating a hanging with the other hens. Is it posible...

    Sick Hen!?

I've never deal with an egg bound hen, so I'm maing my best guess from what I've read. She seems to be in a squatting posture bu I don't feel anything. How can I know for sure? I have 27 other hens and they seem fine except for being barebacked from an overly amorous rooster.Should I seperate...

    Sick Hen!?

I have an 18 month RIR hen who is not acting right. Last week I lost my first bird, one of my girls was dead in the cop when I went out in the morning to let them out and I never noticed anything odd. This morning, I have a hen that is walking slowly, her tail is down and she's not eating...

How long should I use BLU-KOTE?

I have 29 RIR hens and two roos. The hens are getting to be barebacks and I think it's as much from them picking as it is the roos. I started putting blu-kote on them a couple weeks ago and I can see feathers blooming on some of them. I put the treatment on them every couple days. Also, can the...

    Happy Birthday Girls!

Well, they were actually hatched 1 year ago yesterday, but it's one year today that I've had them! I can't begin to tell you how much joy the chickens have brought me and my family over the last year. Thank you BYC Forum friends for all the help and advise.

Which breed has the best temperament?

I've only had RIRs, but I couldn't be happier with them. They are not agressive and are very attentive (like to eat out of my hands)

    chicken noises

rimshoes wrote - "This can also be a sign of contentment. You will hear a lot of "cooing" during the nite nite time at roost. Hens are more voice pron than the roos, but the roos do "coo" at night right before they go to sleep. A "signing" group of birds at roost time is a happy group. They...

    Saddle Patterns-PICS ADDED

I have 29 RIR hens and two Roos. I have also noticed some of my girls getting a little bare on their back. Short of outfitting the flock in saddles, is there anything I can do to make them more comfortable and keep them from getting hurt?

How does this effect egg production?

My light comes on at 6a and goes off at 8a and I usually open the coop around 6:30a. Even though it's not light out until about 7:30a, about half of the girls still go stand outside in the dark (unless it's snowing). I also have the light on from 4p-6p in the evening. The girls are still laying...

    Oyster Shell Consumption...

This may sound like an odd question, but is it normal for the consumption of oyster shell to increase in the winter? This is my first year with chickens and I started offering oyster shell when the started laying at about 18-20 weeks. At first I was filling the little trough once a month, now...

    2 questions!

I'll have a couple eggs when I go out at 6:30a and I'll still have a couple hens still in the nest boxes when I go out at 5:30p. I have noticed though that since its gotten cold out they seem to be laying a majority of the eggs later in the day. That's all I know
