Yep that is the sound of the egg song allright. I really love to hear that sound.

And there is the 'Hawk!" call. It's a sort of low, throaty trill. They cock their heads sideways at the sky and make it, and all the other freeze and stretch up, or run for cover. They do it for planes, helicopters, ravens, magpies, scrub jays. If I do it they all react the same way.

"This can also be a sign of contentment. You will hear a lot of "cooing" during the nite nite time at roost.

Hens are more voice pron than the roos, but the roos do "coo" at night right before they go to sleep.

A "signing" group of birds at roost time is a happy group. They are content, warm and feel safe."

My girls "cooo" in chorus every night when I put them to bed and I always wondered what that meant! It makes me feel great to think it means they're happy

Thank you Rimshoes!

I have three nest boxes in my coop for my 12 gold comets,I bought three of the 10 gallon size blue plastic storage containers from dollar general,I cut out holes in the center of the lids big enough for my hens to go in and out, then I turned them us sideways,,bolted 2=4 braces across the lids and screwed the lids on tight, the screws go through the rim on the outside of the boxes so theirs no danger to the chickens, then I placed the boxes on 2=4 frames and screwed them to the wall,,I placed one on the floor and the hens refuse to lay in it,they lay very well in the one stacked above it and the one beside beside the one that is stacked,,will I need to move the one from the floor or will the hens start using it too?I read that I need one box for every four hens,I have six hens laying as of today,,five eggs in one nest box and one egg in another, should I move the lower box to the same height as the others? to encourage the hens to use it

A ten gallon container could be large enuf for 2 hens.

I don't use them for nest boxes but I have a couple storage containers that are 10 gallon. They are 16"L x 12"W x 12"H. That might be a bit of a squeeze for 2 hens but it depends on the breed.

I have a nest box that 2 hens can be in at the same time. It is 22" x 17" and 10" high. The hens are comfortable and don't even touch but it is just a little larger.

It could be that your pullets will be fine sharing just 2 boxes. You'll be able to judge soon if you haven't already seen 2 of them in 1 box.

edited to say, I see now that they are Comets. Do you think that 2 can fit in 1 box?
