Yep, I'd say that's a roo. Often this coloration on EEs is roo. I really wanted a white EE hen, and every white one I've gotten has ended up a roo, so I feel your pain! He is absolutely beautiful, though!
No worries, this happens sometimes. Likely they were surprised to see it, too, and were investigating this curious new item in their nest box when OOPS! one tap too hard and they broke it. Then there was more curious gooey stuff to investigate. A disappointing beginning, but never fear, there...
Beautiful! I've found lilacs provide excellent shade for the chickens. They can scratch at the base and the bushes are also beautiful landscape additions.
Just wondering if anyone else has a rooster that never, or rarely, crows? Our guy is very obviously a roo, but...no crowing. He's right out our bedroom window, so we'd hear him if he did. Anyone else have a crowless roo?
5 looks a lot like my Australorp, who is 10 weeks old and just starting to get a little shimmer. So 5 may still be an Australorp. All looking like pullets to me, except maybe #5, but if he is an Australorp, they are incredibly hard to determine!
Just found this thread and I'm so excited to see all your beautiful birds! This is my first Splash Laced Red, though I've had GLWs before. Could you help me learn? What are you looking for in terms of coloring differences between cockerels and pullets? And would you experts mind weighing in on...

Any ideas what I could to do to fix this/get them? Thanks!
I'm from Utah, too, and we have many of the same breeds (I have Buff Orpingtons and Plymouth Rocks, in the brooder now and americauna/Easters and a speckled Sussex in my grown-up flock!) We already have so much in common.
Oh, and I love some good chicken therapy, too! It IS so calming to watch...
You're doing great! We all started with lots of questions. Please reach out if you have any more! Good luck with your flock--they'll bring you years of joy!
