    Chickens as pets???

You don't realize how much you treat your chickens as pets until you visit another "farm" and their chickens HATE you! I don't have a farm by any stretch of the word. I have a nice coop out back that houses my 14 chickens and 2 baby quail. I have had all of my chickens since a few days old and...

Injured 4mo old chick- looks like it was scalped :(

She looked a lot better yesterday. I have the weakest stomach ever, so will need to convince my hubby to clean her head off a bit more! I still have her aside from all the other chickens and held her for a bit yesterday again. Thank you for your advice and for checking in :)

Injured 4mo old chick- looks like it was scalped :(

I have 14 chickens, 6 RIR's that are fully grown and in the main part of the coop. 6 BR's that are about 4 months old in a sectioned off area of the coop and 2 small BO's that are in another area. I tried moving the BR's with the RIR's not too long ago and it was scary so we keep them separate...

    MORE chickens!

So I stopped to get feed today and ended up coming home with 2 more chicks (Buff Orpington's) and 2 quail. Sent my husband a text that said "I love you...." and waited.... He thinks I'm nuts but does think they are super cute! Up to 14 chickens and 2 quail now :)

Well, the chicken math caught up with us!

That's right, we added 6 more pullets to our flock yesterday! 6 day old Barred Rocks. I'm super excited, but definitely not as excited as the kids!! My son (almost 4) was taking pictures of them all night long :)

year old hens suddenly not roosting at night??

My girls (6 of them, all RIR's) are about a year old now and have been very healthy. They are eating, drinking and pooping normally but don't seem to be roosting at night... they were all huddled in a corner last night (They aren't cold, I'm in Fl and it was like 70-something last night)...

    First Egg!!!

My girls are all 20 weeks old now (as of this past Monday). We got our first egg on Monday and one everyday since. Such perfect little brown eggs! Im gonna try to check and see who my egg layer is this evening. I've been home sick today, so I tried stalking them to see who my layer is and...

    Wasted Feed

Are your 2 month chicks in a brooder still or in the run/coop? Mine are also 2 months old and are in their coop/ run full time. This is how I've been doing their feed and they seem to love it. My run is 16ft x 8 st, so I have one of these on each side right in the middle. It keeps it from...

    Why Are You Raising Chickens?

I have always wanted chickens! We have a small garden and now 6 hens. I love being able to teach my children to be self-sufficient and about where their food comes from. They both (11 and 3) help in the garden and with the chickens and love it. It's not a chore to them! I can't wait until...

I'm in Florida, too. Palm Bay. Welcome!

    Palm Bay Florida....

I have read a few different things; you can't have chickens at all, that you can as long as they are merely pets..... etc. Does anyone else on BYC live in PB and have chickens? Have you had any issues? Is it legal or not? Thanks in advance :)

    My husband must love me!

Yes, we chicken wired the ground, too. I was unsure how the chicks would do with it, but I certainly didn't want to take any chances with predators. We had our first raccoon scoping out the coop last night..... everything was tight and secure. We trapped and then........................I'll...

    My husband must love me!

So I've always wanted chickens. Always asked for them. Never really had the space or time to care for them and hadn't convinced my husband that it was a good idea. My Aunt has chickens and we happened to visit her recently. My husband and I were treated to a lovely breakfast of fresh eggs and...
