Still not sure what it was. Could have been respiratory, could have been worms, could have been that little peanut-sized nodule that my mom massaged.
The worm eliminator seems a generic. All it says on the bottle is worm eliminator #1 with a picture of a chicken on it. There were 30 capsules...
I'm heartbroken to say that a predator killed one of our hens today, our one and only barred rock hen. RIP Guaiguai (chinese name meaning obedient and clever, which she totally was). You were one of our favorites, and one of the first chicks we ever got. I remember when you were just a wee...
An update:
She is doing much better and seems pretty much back to normal. She has been eating on her own. She doesn't seem to have her full appetite back, but still, she's eating on her own!
A big thank you to everyone who helped us through this process. =)
She looks like she is doing much much better today! Every once and a while she'll gape again, but it seems like for the most part she is back to breathing fairly normally. She's still a little open-mouthed when she breathes, but definitely seems much improved from yesterday. She flaps her wings...
So I went to the feed store today and I got benzimidazole and VetRx. They didn't have the Tylan50 or the fenbendazole, but the lady told me that benzimidazole would kill gape. We treated her with both. We also fed her water with electrolytes, as we don't think she's been drinking by herself...
Well she's perched right now. She's not gaping as much as she was earlier but her breathing is still very audible. She seems alert and she was fairly active earlier (gave us a good chase when we tried to isolate her).
I haven't seen her eat or drink. There was also no bloody mucus. There doesn't seem to be much in her crop.
I'm a pretty inexperienced chicken keeper and don't have any experience with illnesses. The feed stores near me are all closed for the day.
Hi BYC,
I just walked out and found my hen breathing like this. I don't know when it started.

Please help! What should we do? This is my favorite hen, and I don't want to lose her!
Thank you for your reply. What sort of antibiotics would you recommend? And how should I try and care for her to try and help her recover? Is there anything I should feed her, etc.?
Hey everyone,
I have a Rhode Island Red hen who is full grown (2 years old or so?) who is looking very, very poorly. She's been looking listless for a week or so now, but now she looks really really terrible. Her comb is dark and listed over to the side, and she's lying down and breathing...
Hi BYC,
I noticed one of my hens jumping and pecking these berries off a bush. I stopped her from continuing, but they're free range and I want to know if these berries are edible:
Thanks BYC.
Thanks for the reply. How do I apply the Neosporin on her eye?
I checked her again today, and her eye is closed again. =(
I decided to check some of my other hens, and I noticed that for one hen, one of her pupils is much much much smaller than the others. Her other eye looks regular. I...
Hello all,
I checked her again today, and she's behaving like normal. Her eye is open, but I can still see the white speck with cloud. The eye is not swollen or anything. I couldn't tell if the cloud was smaller.
I checked the pdf, and her eye doesn't seem to look like any of the ones...
