    Have you tried grooving the board ? I really believe you will find that will work, because it gives them a place for their nails and toes to grip. Just like raised rungs do....

    Great! If he us uncomfortable with doing it that way - look for a cabinet shop, or high school wood shop - and ask them to do it for you.     I would not miss this point!!! If you will haveANY chance that the floor will get wet - or even damp - kitty litter will become a slick,nasty, heavy layer of wet clay. I have experienced this first hand on another project...
