how long till the eggs come?

Aww, I'm sorry! I believe many hens start laying around 6 months, but mine have been anywhere from six months to eight months. My Swedish Flower Hen just started laying this week, and she was born in December. My Marans were born in January and no eggs yet.

    internal layer? now what

Hi! I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what it's like agonizing over symptoms and then wondering what you should have/could have/might have done. This may sound a little calloused, but sometimes it just happens, and considering the rest of your flock has no problems, I really wouldn't stress out...

    Paprika?? Does it work?

Don't know about paprika... Believe it or not, my husband is massively allergic to it (similar to an allergy to peanuts). He is also allergic to chicken, which is really depressing. But I would consider adding apple cider vinegar to their water!

I want four hens. Should I start with two or four pullets?

I would get four at the same time, also. However.... I would recommend getting all the same breed. I got four hens when I first started, and I got two Orpingtons and two of another breed. The other breed picked on the Orpingtons mercilessly, even though they had all been raised together. My...

    Adding a single chick?

Shouldn't be a problem, but I would consider keeping the pullet separate for a few days/a week, just to make sure it's healthy. Also, if there IS a problem, just keep an eye on them. If you notice anything funky (screaming, blood, etc! ;-) ) separate them and introduce them more slowly -- a...

Seeking Your Advice in what to stock in New Urban Farm Store

Cool! That is such a neat idea, and kudos to you for taking on your dream! I'm not trying to punt the question, but I think a lot of it depends on your demographic. How well do you know your soon-to-be customers? Are they interested in organic chicken feed? Do they butcher their own chickens...

Introducing the girls to the outdoors.

You should be fine! Just watch, and if they are all huddled up together and acting cold, you will know to take them where it's warm again. :)

    uh oh

Right, definitely check with your zoning laws. There isn't much you can do if it's illegal to have chickens. Somebody probably complained about the chickens. :-( In the towns around here, they say no chickens.... but they don't enforce it unless a neighbor or somebody complains.

Dirt floor for run? Or something else?

Hi! On my first coop, I was very worried about a predator trying to dig underneath, so I put down wire on the floor of the run and then covered it with sand and dirt. Well, that was a major pain, because it was very hard to clean and I kept hitting the wire with my shovel when I did. On our next...

Chicks eating minute pieces of pine shavings harmful?

Should be fine! Mine have done similar things. I have heard not to use cedar shavings, but pine should be fine.

Help, my hens are bleeding from their backends!

Photos would probably be helpful. But... does it look the blood is coming from the missing tail feathers, or is it coming from inside them?
