How do you apply it to an area that's already wet? Would I still mix it into a solution to spray or can I just sprinkle it into the mud/puddles? Will that risk harming the ducks since the dilution isn't as carefully controlled?
This warm winter is really messing with our duck set up. They normally spend the cold months up closer to our house without much of a yard, but when it's snowy they don't really want to wander far anyway and frozen poop doesn't smell bad. Then when it thaws, we shovel it out. The bedding in the...
Is anyone interested in a couple of juvenile Aztec drakes? They're from ducks I got from @Knighstar679 with a mallard cross a few generations back. Mama is a lovely darker duck (pearl, I think) and the rest of the family is all the porcelain variant.
I'm in Rochester, NY, and no clue how to...
We're trying to get back to even a 2 to 1 ratio!
At present we have our flock divided into one group of BGG, one isolated jerk boy, main cage with 4 boys and 2 girls (just barely young enough to still get away with this - planning to reconfigure this weekend) and a disabled runt male with one...
I have 2 extra juvenile Aztec drakes with a mallard cross a few generations back to strengthen the gene pool. Mama is a lovely darker duck (pearl, I think) and the rest of the family is all the porcelain variant.
No charge if you come get them from my home south of Rochester, NY. Would also...
It's possible, though it wouldn't be my first guess. He's a lot smaller than the one that looks like our big ducks, so i was figuring at least one of his parents was an Aztec. And his markings don't look like the pictures we have of them as ducklings, so probably one Aztec and one big duck for...
If he was assisted, it wasn't by humans. He was hatched in a nest. One of two that hatched and were found trampled against a wall. I assumed his problems were due to the trampling, but I called times up on the remaining eggs and the one that I looked inside had what looked like a prematurely...
Not great. I was worrying over the wrong leg. The "swollen" one seems okay, but the scrawny one is pretty much useless and now just hangs behind him.
I managed to splint the feet so it would be possible to stand on them and that worked okay. I also tried to correct his spraddle legged...
I've been putting nutri-drench in its water. Niacin is on the ingredient list, but doesn't say how much. Leg issues weren't on my radar yesterday. Wasn't sure it would even make it long enough to worry about that!
I do have the b-complex and put a little bit in the water now, but I don't...
I can flatten the feet out, but the duckling doesnt spread out either one voluntarily.
I'm not sure which leg you're talking about when you say "the one". Do you think the bad leg is the scrawny one or the thick one? Should I make shoes for both?
I have a duckling that has been having trouble walking and I was thinking spraddle leg. Okay, hoping that anyway.
Brought this little guy inside to recover from trampling.
When I went to hobble him, though, I noticed that his legs looked very different from each other, but I'm not sure which is...
We also lost a duckling on its very first night outside in a reinforced dog crate that we had been using for ducks for nearly 10 years. Raccoon(?) discovered that there was an inch of wall below the door that hadn't been wrapped in hardware cloth and took advantage of it. It was an awful sight...
Guess it's time to break the news to the kids that a couple of the boys will need to be dinner.
I hate this part. Can't we somehow genetically engineer these birds to make fewer boys??
Update to this thread: we've been keeping the boys in their own cage at night, then penning them with the big ducks during the day, but we let them all out together for their morning run to the day cages and back again at night.
We've also added two new Aztec girls to the mix who are finally...
Nope. The duck did finally decide to wait to lay her egg until they were out for the day and we have them divided by size then. It's one of the big ducks. So strange for her to suddenly start laying again this time of year!
Do these ducks lay particularly large eggs for their size?
All our ducks stopped laying over a month ago and we've never had them start up again the same season, so when we found an egg yesterday I assumed it had just been hidden somewhere. Then we found another today.
We do have 2 aztec girls...
