How do you care for a new mama and chicks, in the main flock?

Thanks both of you. She is a good mom and they seem to be thriving. I put some feed on the ground, because the hen seems to insist on eating off the floor of the coop. Lots of rice straw on the floor and she scratches it all over. Also made a little nest for her and chicks in the corner on the...

How do you care for a new mama and chicks, in the main flock?

I am trying to figure out what I am supposed to do with my new chicks that their mama hen is taking care of. How do I make sure they get enough of their food, when their mama is running all over the coop, scratching and pecking at I don't know what. She has food to eat too, but I put in the...

Meyer Hatchery - 4 of 15 chicks dead

Wow. So sorry for your loss. I got chicks in late October from my pet chicken and lost 5 or 6 out of 15. They did reimburse me, but that isn't the point. Three were dead in the box. I think it must be the weather, although I lost a couple from Murray McMurray last March too. I have since...

    Chick Won't Eat Crumbles...

I would just feed both for now, cutting down on the mush, day by day, until he is eating the other well.

My first chicks have hatched. *PICS* *Fosters added*

Cute babies. My first hatch from a broody hen happened four days ago. It is so much fun to see the two of them running around with their mama, instead of having them under lights in the brooder. She is doing a great job of taking care of them, but it creates challenges with the other flock...

    Bloody injury to neck

I want to do an update. This hen is doing very well. She is even getting new feathers on her upper neck! I did not expect this hen to survive and am delighted she is. She still sticks close to the coop, partly, I think, because if I am not dilegent about keeping anti peck on her new skin, she...

    Puncture wound to crop?

Thanks for the responses. I really do appreciate any feedback. Although I've had a lot of luck healing chickens, I determined that this poor girl was beyond help, at least without a prohibitive vet bill and even then, who knows? So I took her to the animal shelter yesterday and they euthanized...

    Puncture wound to crop?

I have a hen who has three puncture wounds, apparently from a dog. One is near or in her crop and there is drainage from it. One is behind her neck and one is on her back. But the skin over the crop is greenish colored. Her food is green. What is the best treatment? I put her in a pen by herself...

Blue? I didn't know they come in blue. Do you sell them? Do you ship? Do you live in California by chance? If so, do you vaccinate for Mereck's? I don't think I spelled that right, sorry.

Help!! Amature losing chickens, just lost the 5th to unknown reason.

I have read many, many times, on different sites, that chickens can generally withstand cold, although those with large combs have more trouble (frostbite) but that they Cannot tolerate Drafts well. Since you mentioned that you might have, "too much ventilation," perhaps that is it. I believe it...

Thanks for the information, and such a quick reply! I am going to get some. Am going to a chicken show on the 16th of this month. Maybe I will be able to buy some then. Maybe a trio. :-) Good luck on your baby chickies.

What does the honey do? Where I live, I would be afraid of red ants and honey bees finding her and torturing her to death, but just curious about the healing properties of honey, as I'd never heard of that before.

Comment by 'mychickenbrood' in article 'Chicken Breeds Why Naked Necks Are Perfect For Your Backyard Flock'

Hi. I am researching this breed and so appreciate the comments. My question is, do other chickens peck at their necks more than other breeds? I know chickens may peck at each other regardless of breed, but because the naked neck is, well, naked, do they get pecked at more?

If they are losing weight. Check their breast bone to see if they seem to skinny. Sometimes people see worms in the poo, but I believe by that time they are really overloaded with worms. I know the poo can change too, but am not that well schooled on poo yet. I rountinly worm every few months...

Please Help with a broken foot / leg.

How interesting that the other chickens favored the injured one. What breed are they? Really glad she is doing okay. Wow. I never would have thought one would recover from a broken leg without a vet. I have too many chickens to be able to afford vet care every time one gets hurt. I probably...

    EE attacked by a dog

Thanks so much Chelsebell. I am contacting that link you shared. Also appreciate your taking the time to explain ringer's Lactate. Her wound is actually looking amazing. I had to debride it Sunday and then go our of town for two days. Today (Tuesday) I checked it and it is granulating. She...

    Bloody injury to neck

Thank-you. Yes, in reading several posts I did see that members caution against the analgesic in ointments, so I am going to use plain antibiotic from now on. I would also like to know why. Also, I realize that not everyone has access to the type of wound dressing I do, since I have a...

Doesn't lactated Ringer's have glucose in it? I'll Google that. If so, it seems like the glucose would not be best on a wound. However, if you have good success with it, who am I to say differently, :-) If I can order saline online, in larger quantities, that would be great. My pharmacist...
