    Feeding laying Hens

I feed mine laying feed because that is all they need. A lot of people smarter than me have come up with the most economical and beneficial feed for laying hens. Why mess with perfection? The benefits of supplementing feed with more consumeristic practices and fermenting feed is questionable at...

eggs have holes in them but the membrane isn't broken

That isn't likely because of weak shells. From the pictures it looks like your egg shells are thick enough. The birds are getting curious about what the eggs are. First, get the eggs out of there as quickly as you can before they can peck at them. Second, get some hard fake eggs (golf balls work...

    Hawks :(

If you can go to an animal swap and pick up a roo, they're cheap at about five dollars for a decent one, they will fight to the death to protect their flock. Some people have even posted pictures of dead hawks their roosters have defeated! I dunno, seems cheaper than the alternatives.

Anyone on BYC in college at the moment? Come say Hello!

My wife and I are in college at the moment, also. We are a bit of a non-tra though. Tough economy forced us to upgrade our educational status, so back to school we went! So far it has been quite fun. We are both juniors now but will attain senior status (in school, not that old yet!) at...

    Raising chicks is hard!

No white lights is very true. Use red if you can. Seems to soothe them.

    Can anyone I.D this chick?

Looks a bit like one of my Americanas (sp?). I know, if I have 'em I should know how to spell it. Sorry though, I just don't. Anyway, they were all a little faster growing than the Russian Orlifs I got with them but not as fast growing as the Buff Orpingtons. I'm still a little new to this so...

What are your state's "hot issues?"

I'd rather grow a plant that hasn't ever killed anyone (marijuana) than a plant that kills millions (tobacco)

What do YOU use for a brooder?

I use a store bought chicken coop I got from Tractor Supply. It comes with an elevated mesh floor over a removable tray so that the chicks don't have to walk around in their own poop. It's gone through two separate sets of litters (?) and is working great for the purpose.

    Mad with a broken heart

This is one of the most posted topics I've noticed here on BYC. It's definitely a bummer of a situation. I'm sorry for your loss. The comments you're likely to see range from placing the blame on you for not having your chickens fully secured, to comments lobbying for the killing of the...

    Consolidated Kansas

Three weeks and three days old, my fifteen chicks and two ducklings spent their first night outside (under a heatlamp). With the temp getting down to twenty-six degrees last night I was very happy to see them all happy and running around their run this morning. Though it shouldn't surprise me...

    Polish Chickens!!!!

Ours name is Maude. She looks like an old lady with her feathers all up on top of her head like that. Looks EXACTLY like yours. Most personable bird in our flock and definitely the family's favorite!

What are your state's "hot issues?"

If the government can make a plant illegal, it makes one wonder exactly how "free" we really are. I didn't serve my country just to be dictated to about what I can and cannot put into my own body. smh
