    Cedar brooder???:(

I know this is an old post (before someone jumps on that fact). ;-) I just wanted to add that sealers and other such products are petroleum-based and give off very toxic fumes, much more so than any natural wood oil could do! If you're very concerned about the cedar oils, you can always get...

Comment by 'L3Home' in article 'How To Clip Trim The Feather Wings Of Your Chicken To Prevent Flight'

You _shouldn't_ cut a blood feather (they're pretty obvious on most birds -- it's kind of like the "quick" in a cat or dog's toenail; you can see the blood), and even if you don't see the blood in the shaft, if the feather is shorter than the others, it's a blood feather. They don't shut off the...

    A Pink and White egg?

I found this thread when searching for this color of egg. :) My BR lays more pale-brown eggs, oddly enough, but I have a Silver Laced Wyandotte who lays the most beautiful pale pink eggs with fine, regularly spaced white speckles all over the egg. They are GORGEOUS. As a sidenote, and the...

    Will chickens eat ants?

Same with my flock of eight girls! I even found a bunch of ants on a rock, and brought the rock in, thinking they'd love it! I don't know if they can't see them (these are the really small black ants; I wouldn't give my girls the stinging red ones, just in case) but they simply ignore them. They...

    Should I eat this bird??

Probably a good idea... rewarding the fox for hunting your chickens may not matter but you never know... I'm sorry you lost some of your birds.

    Should I eat this bird??

Because it has claw marks or punctures, I wouldn't chance it. Either the fox or the goshawk caused that damage, and both are known carriers of many diseases, some of which might not be able to be killed by heat... the final decision is yours, of course, but why risk it...

Getting the babies used to their coop -- suggestions?

With a lot of wild animals, make sure your run is secure, too! Just having a coop to run and hide in won't protect them if something can run in there after them.

Getting the babies used to their coop -- suggestions?

I'm sure they want to be warm and dry as much we would. :)

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hopefully someone can help; sorry, I just use the pre-made crumble stuff still and will likely use the pellet stuff when they get older. I wouldn't know the first thing about special mixes. :)

Getting the babies used to their coop -- suggestions?

It'll be interesting to know if the mock ramp helps at all. :) I'm discovering that chickens seem to have very bad spacial relation deduction -- they can't figure out that to get onto the other side of a fence they have to go around the fence to the open side of it. Stuff like that. It makes...

    Washingtonians

My EE's are the same way! Even though my other breeds are supposed to be much bigger, the EE's are huge right now. It'll be interesting to see how that works out, especially since one of them (Pocky) is doing her darndest to become the top hen -- she's making mad dashes at the others, to see if...

Getting the babies used to their coop -- suggestions?

Tonight, again, they were all in there when I went to look! This time they even settled down on their own (I was out a bit late and I didn't get back until over an hour after sundown, so their light was on during that time). I turned it off for them, but tomorrow I'll put it on a timer...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

You may want to mention what age and type your flock is... starter/pullet, layer, meat birds, they all require different concentrations of ingredients. :)

Getting the babies used to their coop -- suggestions?

Night #7, I turned on their 75-watt soft white light again, and this time I just went in the house to let happen what was going to happen. Got a bunch of chores done, and by the time I went back outside to check on them, it was pitch dark (except for their light). Not a bird in sight. Everyone...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks, Happy Chooks. Sadly, that's what I figured. It means he's destined for my cousin's 'farm' as I cannot have a rooster in city limits.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I've got pictures now, but the chest coloration might be hard to show... I kept them in the brooder and with the heat we got earlier this month, they didn't fully feather in as soon as they should have. They're outdoors now so they're getting them in faster now, but she/he doesn't have as many...
