I read in another forum that some people feed cat food to their chickens to promote feather growth.
My chickens have been losing feathers, and I'm not sure why. They don't seem to be moulting and no sign of bugs. I'm wondering if maybe it's their diet?
Maybe I should add more protein to...
Thanks, I did check those out and I didn't see anything like that.
I'll give a more thorough check tomorrow. It doesn't seem like molting either though.
Thanks!
I'm not sure if I have a bug problem or not? I have four hens and three have missing feathers on their necks and chest. One just has it on her chest.
I tried looking for any sign of bugs etc. I didn't see anything moving around. On one of the black chicks it seemed like she had white speck...
Thanks, yes a much better search came up!
This looks like a great site if anyone else is interested.

Is there a simple and easy way to explain how to grow your own sprouts?
The websites I am finding all our seed companies that sell kits to grow your own, along with their seeds.
Isn't there some way to do it without buying an expensive kit?
Thanks for any info!
I had no idea!
I must have a dull bunch of girls! I have two mice living under their heated water dish. When I go to empty the bowl, the mice go and scurry to different parts of the cage and the chickens just sit there and don't even notice!
Thankfully, I think I'd freak out if they caught...
Thanks, these were taken last November. I'll try and get some more updated pictures up, as they are bigger now etc.
But thanks, I'm feeling better!
And yes, it does have really big feet. At least I think so, for being a city girl! I'm actually surprised how big they have gotten, I didn't...
Can someone tell me the sex of these chickens? I was told they were hens when I got them, I'm hoping they were right!
So far we haven't seen any eggs, but I'm hoping it's just due to the winter?
No crowing either, but I just want to be safe and get an opinion!
Thanks!!
Isn't it nice!! I got my heated dog bowl and it's like....how did I ever live without it?!
And I got it on sale for 15 dollars, but it was really only regularly 19.99, so even for 20 dollars it's money well spent!
Add me as another lover of sand!! It's great! I just set up my coop this early fall so I'm a newbie but so far I'm liking it.
I couldn't imagine any other way than just raking it all up.
I put a rubbermaid containter under their roost, where they seem to poop the most and collect a lot...
It is a solution, I just don't like to get up as early as the chickens do in the cold!
I'd rather they wake up to fresh water and I don't have to worry too much.
But that is what I'm doing right now, until I find the right solution.
I like the idea of hooking something up to a battery, seems much safer.
Just a car battery? What supplies would I need exactly?
edit....ok I looked up the 12 volt battery, got that! Definately not a car battery, sorry!
So what kind of light could be hooked up to that, that could fit into...
I am so on the fence with the heat, and I think I will go ahead an not use the heat lamp! I will feel better about it.
So many people here assure they are fine in the cold, and are in colder climates than I am.
I'm just afraid my coop isn't as well built! I think it is...but I always second...
Did anyone watch the Food Network Thanksgiving special with Alton Brown cooking the turkey?
I know this board is for chickens, but his concept probably applies to chickens too!
He was talking about how to buy a turkey and what to look for on the labels.
When he got to Free Range, he said it...
