Seeking any advice or similar experiences from those who've been there. Two of my 5 hens are laying. The first started laying before we finished building the coop's nesting box. She dug her own little nest in the corner of the coop (though not dark or private), which just happens to be under the...
My BO started to squat at 24 weeks and laid her first egg at 25 weeks. I have 4 other hens who have yet to lay (all the same age). I thought for sure my RIR would have started to lay by now! I'm starting to get really impatient, but it's fun to go outside each day to find the lone egg.
Very excited to announce our first eggs! I found 2 small brown eggs in the coop on Sunday. Picked up a cold egg, brought it inside...went back to the coop an hour later and found another one, this one warm. My first fresh, warm egg! My girls are 25 weeks old.
Eggs on my counter. Sorry...
How sad. I realize that I have NO IDEA what it must have been like to have to evacuate. But I promise you that I would be VERY aware of the 5 little feathered beings that are out in my backyard. Those firefighters are wonderful people.
That photo of the crayfish on the platter with the corn is gorgeous! And I love the cute sneaky girls stealing some.
Minchi, I'm there with you, I probably have the same medicated starter feed that you have. Kiowa Country Corner recommended the same thing that the feed bag says, to feed...
gardendufus, Babe is beautiful!
I have an 8 week old SLW (Miss Pecky Sue) who looks a lot like Minchi's. I just noticed in the last two days that her comb and face are looking much redder.
And, just mentioning because I'm really excited about it, my Buff Orpington is starting to look so...
Mo, I can't wait to hear about your chicks! I thought I wanted 3 or 4, and I went with 5. (Four different breeds.) Now I wish I could have more because I really love my Rhode Island Red and want more RIR girls. Maybe next year. I also promised my husband that we can get him his Jersey Giant.
I can't believe what it looks like out here by my house in eastern Parker. So incredibly smoky. I just spent the last half hour trying to find out if a new nearby wildfire popped up or if the storm clouds have brought the Waldo Canyon smoke all the way over here. It's so bad I had to close...
I bet it would help. We just finished building our coop about a week ago and weren't ready to construct a run yet, but with this heat we made a quick "emergency" run for my chicks. We have few trees, so no shade at my house. I put some beach towels over the top of the run to give them some...
I took the tray from a flower pot yesterday and filled it with water to keep in the coop. Went out a few times throughout the day and dipped their feet in it...they seemed to like that! One little girl was standing in it quite a bit to keep cool. My husband is not that far off from MacGyver...
Hmm. I'm not sure how it works either. I'm in Parker but on the Elbert County side, so it's a little different. No HOA, and I have 5 acres zoned for residential agriculture so I think I can have a maximum of 15 poultry and/or fowl, roos included.
It's a hot one out there today! I'm...
Our girls are out in the coop today for the first time, and spending their first night in it! Well, 4 out of 5 are out there. My little girl who was on her deathbed last weekend will stay inside with me a little longer until she's ready. They seem to be enjoying the space so far. Coop...
I live on the eastern edge of Parker in Elbert County, and just about everyone in my neighborhood has roosters (but me!). I prefer sitting outside with my pullets listening to the roosters crow in the distance. :) It's great out here! Lots of space...everyone seems to have at least a few...
