3 Month-old Black Jersey Giant Rooster Needs Good Home, Bucks County PA

Would you mind telling me about where and how he will be kept? I really want him to go to a caring home where he will be well-treated. Thanks for your understanding! If it seems like a good match, I will be glad to send you some pics of my little guy :-) ( soon to be big guy!)

3 Month-old Black Jersey Giant Rooster Needs Good Home, Bucks County PA

My beautiful Black Jersey Giant has just started crowing, so I now know he's a rooster. I can only have hens in my suburban neighborhood, and I live close to neighbors on all sides who will not appreciate a rooster's crowing. He is 3 months old and has been lovingly hand-raised alongside my...

    First time chick owner!

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the plastic tote set-up, sounds a little too much like an oven with the heat lamp right over it. Not much air circulation. The starting temp should be around 90 degrees, and there should always be room to get away from the heat, maybe the heat lamp could be over...

Do Jersey Giant Chicks Feather Much More Slowly??!

I have my first Jersey Giant chick (black), never raised this breed before, and she is SO behind the other breeds in feathering it is crazy! She is going on 5 weeks and hardly even has the feathering of a typical 2 week old chick. Her body size is good but she is practically bald ( of course...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

When I got my first batch of chicks, even after reading every book my library had, and lots of content on this site, I did not know about cecal droppings, and I kept thinking my chicks had coccidiosis. The illustrated poop chart I found on this site solved that problem - very useful to have!

Any advice on treating a possible bowel obstruction?

If I were to check her for an egg again, how far into the vent should/can I go? I went up to the first knuckle of my index finger before and swept my finger all around the first time I checked her. I tried to go further but my finger wouldn't really go in any farther. How far in can I go? I...

Any advice on treating a possible bowel obstruction?

Update - Last night after roosting time I mixed up the suggestion concoction for "doughy" crop from the previous crop link. It FIZZED! Then we proceeded to syringe it in small doses into my hen's beak, which took awhile - as I said I am probably BYC'S Worst Medicator. We got it down, i did some...

    HELP! My poor Zeus.

I'd definitely check the feet for something hurting him as suggested. The towel method worked very well for me to inspect my hen's feet when she was limping. Laid her very gently right on her side on my kitchen table wrapped up snugly in the towel so she could not flap. Good luck!

Any advice on treating a possible bowel obstruction?

I did much reading of the two links.I went to the feed store after work but they did not have the liquid wormer fenbenazole or safeguard. they had only wazine ( or watrazine?- only worked on roundworms and said on bottle not safe for egg-laying hens whose eggs are consumed by humans) and Strike...

Any advice on treating a possible bowel obstruction?

Thank you both for taking the time to reply! I have only 3 chickens, they are all 4 yrs old, and I have never wormed them. They are the first chickens I have ever owned. I know, shame on me for not worming! I am going to read up on worming them tonight and I will go to my feed store and buy the...

    Sick Chickie

Is it her crop that's bulging? Does it feel like it's full of feed? If it seems to be the crop you could wait to see if it empties or not, and possibly follow some impacted crop suggestions if it doesn't. I hope she gets better! (I'm right near you in PA, waiting on some advice on a please-help...

Sick rooster - Sour Crop? Worms? Help!

I forgot to mention that two of my hens have darker purplish tips/areas on their combs and I believe it is from frostnip over the harsh winters. Could be that.

Sick rooster - Sour Crop? Worms? Help!

There's a ton of info on treating sour crop if you search for "sour crop" on here. Usually you will need an antifungal of some kind for the yeast infection causing sour crop. I just tried treating sour crop in my hen even though i'm not sure she has it. I gave a portion of an oral flucanozole...

    swollen hen

Sounds like some kind of ascites (fluid build-up due to varying causes). I have read lots of people drain the abdomen with a needle and syringe to draw the fluid out but have never done it. There are threads about it with more details about the supplies/needle insertion if you search for...

    HELP! Chicken badly injured beak

I have a hen who has had two bloody beak injuries. They both healed on their own with time. She didn't want to eat because they were painful, but eventually she did eat. I offered lots of soft foods and made sure they were a nice room temperature for the easiest eating possible. Hopefully she...

My barred rock has survived TWO fox attacks (and one red-tail hawk attack). Both left pretty nasty but shallow skin injuries where feathers and skin were pulled off. Both times I brought her straight inside the house and hold her in my lap in a towel while checking her over and kept her inside...

Can anyone assist with finding a chick's actual ear canal?

thank you! I was assuming it had to be in the circular feathered area since I know the bare skin is the ear lobe. I think the chick is just so small that there is no visible opening, yet. I'm going to check again, though. Thank you so much for that video!!!
