That's unfortunate. It seems that maybe this neighbor has been told all they can complain about is noise, so that becomes the issue he uses. I would ask if he has any pets, if not, I bet he has an air conditioner. Both of which make more noise than a chicken.
Do you have roosters?
I tried that in the past. It worked well as I was using it to get them adjusted to using my bucket feeder. I'll have to try it again. Thanks for the KISS idea!
Hey all,
I have a very small flock (3 birds only), so I tend to spoil them a bit. I wanted to add a few treats to get them used to eating out of my hand and to get them to come running when I break out the treats. But, I have a bit of a weird situation. Of my 3, only one likes dried mealworms...
Below is what I wrote in my thread after three years of fighting. Hopefully it helps. If you want to just get your foot in the door, it will be difficult unless you have a commissioner/council member that will speak up for you as well.
Also, where do you live? Maybe there aren't any...
Where is your town? The best place to start is find out their code/ordinances and see if they restrict them. If you can give me a where you are located I'll help you along.
I don't know Canadian law, but here in FL, all public records are... well.. public. So if it's anything like here, you could ask to see that information and they have to give it to you. That would be a good start.
What community support do you have? You will need more than a couple people.
Don't give up. It took us 3 years to get an ordinance passed. Sometimes it will feel like nothing is moving, but you can use those times to educate the council/commission and gain community support.
If you have...
In Orlando, FL the ordinance was not only ratified, it was expanded. So yes, we have some experience. We in Deltona, FL are in the middle of our one year trial right now.
What we did is emailed surrounding cities in FL that have allowed backyard flocks and asked for their animal control division or person(s) in charge of code enforcement to reply in regards to complaints directly associated with keeping backyard hens. This gave us a huge advantage going in as it...
I understand where you are coming from, but that is simply not the case in this situation. The ordinance is spelled out and defined. The council/comission can't, on a whim, decide what is and what isn't domesticated. A municipality must have spelled out definitions OR explain that such...
I just looked up the code in question. I cannot find any restriction of keeping chickens. This is the only restriction they have:
608.05 DOMESTIC ANIMALS AND FOWL.
No person shall keep or house any animals or domestic fowl within the City except dogs, cats, birds, or other animals commonly...
I am still confused. Are they allowed or not? And if you claim they are domestic, does that bring them out from under the restriction?
I have been in a 3 year battle with our city and we just got it passed last month. So be prepared for a long fight.
I would call the Animal Control Division for the city. Ask to speak to the supervisor. And then ask them your first question. They should be able to give you more info. I doubt that it's 100' from your own dwelling.
Well, my last post on this topic was almost 3 years ago. However, after 3 years of fighting city hall we ended up getting a chicken ordinance passed.
There are many things which led us to this point, but I would say the 3 major ones are:
1. Support - This cannot be understated. You must...
They are right at 4 months. The tail feathers and dark yellow legs on Pancake are what have me questioning things. But the lack of saddle feathers or comb had me confused as well. Thank you for the reply.
I am pretty new to the easter eggers so I am not sure what I have here. Hopefully you guys and gals will be able to help me out. Here are a couple pictures of my 3:
The main one I am concerned about being a roo is Pancake (forefront in pic):
But maybe there is more than one roo...
I just wanted to clear the air a bit. There was no prohibition of chickens when the family got them. The code was recently (like a month ago) re-written, and the City of Debary put in new language to define certain things. I am not certain about grandfathering someone in, but it would be akin to...
