Debeaking- the truth
I was always of the opinion that debeaking was cruel, but after raising a flock of 300 through a maine winter I started to think more and more about it. My hens free range all through spring, summer and fall but the winters here are just too cold. During the free range...
Tell the neighbors that the next time their dog is on your property you will shoot it. It is perfectly within your rights to do so and where I come from it would be expected. I had a pair of huskies kill 15 of my chickens one day. They got away before I could do much. Surely enough they came...
I've gotten three chicks like this. The best thing to do honestly is kill them. I tried to save the first two like this and they just suffered. Couldn't get up enough to eat and drink properly. Made the wife do the deed with the third..she's tough....

Though I don't relish slaughtering the roosters the only reason they will live is for breeding. I hate all the noise and many roosters seem to see my 2.5 year old as fair game for venting their aggression. Albeit I do find them to often be much more beautiful birds than my hens...
I was under the impression that birds who feather out more quickly and develop their combs/wattles first will start laying first. But you are saying early maturation doesn't equal earlier egg laying? are you sure on this?
My roos are:
1 RIR
2 New hampshire reds
2 white leghorns
2 australorps
1 ameraucana
all are approximately 3.5 months. Surprisingly one of the new hampshires is easily 2 lbs heavier than all the others.
It sounds like putting them toghether may work after all if there are no ladies present...
