    Rooster attacked hen

Update: The rooster in question is 7 mos old and I kept him separated from the hens for about 4 weeks. They could still see & hear each other, but he didn't roost with them and could not get to them. I started turning him out with them on the weekends when I could keep a closer eye on him...

    Rooster attacked hen

Well, that sucks, sorry to hear that. It's going to probably take a month for the one hen he was after to heal up completely, so I'll keep him separated and then see how he acts. If he attacks her again, I guess I'll have to get rid of him. Thank you both for the responses.

    Rooster attacked hen

I'm interested to hear if separating the rooster worked for you. I have run into the same problem with a ~6 month old Welsummer rooster. I have three ~2yo hens along with the other 6 ~6 month old hens with whom he was raised as a chick. He has singled out one of the 2yo hens. I first...

Possibly egg bound, but can't really tell. Any advice?

Hello again. I want to first thank everyone for their advice, encouragement and kind words. I've never seen this condition before, so I'm glad I at least now know what it is if it ever comes up again. After watching the video, I'm positive this is what was wrong with her. Since originally...

Possibly egg bound, but can't really tell. Any advice?

Greetings, I apologize if this has been asked & answered already. I have a RIR hen, about 7 1/2 years old. She's overweight (not morbidly so, but noticeable). On Sunday I noticed she was isolating herself in the run, tail down, head down, not interested in food (she's a voracious eater...

why did you start keeping chickens

I wanted to keep chickens in the garden in the hopes they would keep the snakes out. I live in an area where we have two different types of Rattlesnakes; the Western Diamondback and the Mojave. I usually find at least one of them in the garden every summer.I figured some chickens running...

RIR, cockerel or pullet? (The one on the left.)

Hmmm. Well, I guess time will tell then. Either way, I'm happy...rooster or hen.

RIR, cockerel or pullet? (The one on the left.)

Nobody is crowing yet. The RIR birds are still making younger bird sounds, but every once in a while they let a cluck slip here or there.

RIR, cockerel or pullet? (The one on the left.)

About the best I could do to get the saddle feathers and neck in one shot.

RIR, cockerel or pullet? (The one on the left.)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of the differences between true RIRs and the feed store birds. Given what you said about shipping, I guess that would make these guys right at 10 weeks old (10 weeks since I picked them up). It's pretty ironic actually. I was away on business when they...

I'll try to get some more pictures of him and post them soon. Thanks!

RIR, cockerel or pullet? (The one on the left.)

I have two RIRs that were supposed to be pullets. I bought them at a local feed store and was told they were sexed. I know the sexing is not 100%, but am starting to think I got a pullet and a cockerel. I've attached a picture of my two RIRs (with one of the Ameraucanas standing behind). I...
