    A Sad Sunday

It will happen to anyone, please don't blame yourself. Over the years we've lost many birds to foxes, but we love chickens too much to give up.

"And one of these days these chicks are gonna walk all over you..."

Our cats are really laid back around the chickens! The funny thing is that they go after birds all the time. But tiny chicks can literally walk all over them and they won't so much as bat an eye.

    Sexing Indian Blue peachicks

Is this for real? ;) I mean, my husband always says I have cold feet, but I had no idea it applies to peafowl...

    Sexing Indian Blue peachicks

Ooh, that's great!! I was guessing number 1 is a hen before, but was unsure about the younger ones.

    Sexing Indian Blue peachicks

Here is number 2 again. And number 3 again. And here they are side by side on the perch: 2 on the right, 3 on the left. Is it possible to tell more definitely now?

    Sexing Indian Blue peachicks

Hi all, We are new to peafowl and currently have three chicks. The first is older than the others, about 4 months, and the younger are 2.5 months. Anyone can help us determine whether we have boys or girls? We have our guesses, but I'll refrain until I hear what others say. :-) Chick 1...

    Leghorn eggs have thinner shells??

Thanks! I wonder why they are the only ones with this problem, though. Maybe because they are my most prolific layers, so they need more calcium?

    Leghorn eggs have thinner shells??

Oh, they feed all right. They probably eat twice as much as any other of my hens! They're also very good foragers. I have never noticed this (about the white shelled eggs), but then, apart from the Leghorns, I only raise brown-egg layers. Yes, I never rely on just commercial feed either. But...

    Leghorn eggs have thinner shells??

We keep a mixed flock, and two of our current layers are White Leghorns. All our chickens get the same feed, but while our other hens lay eggs with beautiful uniform shells, the Leghorns' eggs often have shells that are porous, thin and prone to cracking. They free-range on very mineral-rich...

Marans prone to blood spots in eggs?

Thanks for your contribution, everyone! We might look into a different strain of Marans, anyway.

Marans prone to blood spots in eggs?

We have friends who have beautiful Marans and we were all set on getting some hatching eggs from them, but they warned us that their chickens almost always have blood spots in their eggs. I know brown-egg layers are more prone to have blood/meat spots than white egg layers. Are Marans especially...

    Neighbor complaining about feathers

Listen, I know this kind of people. We have neighbors who went bananas because of a surveillance camera we installed so we could keep an eye on the kids as they play outside. They thought that we put up the camera to spy on them and... what? I dunno. Sell them to the KGB? One day, after a...

    Share your entertaining chicken stories

Hello there! I'm a blogger and writer on all subjects related to simple, self-reliant living. At the moment I'm working on a book about raising small livestock (in particular chickens and goats) in the backyard - aimed more for people who don't have a lot of space and are trying to make the most...
