If no one breeds for type the breed will never get into the standard. Why not breed for type first then egg color?
A lot of people starting out breeding Marans have been attracted to the breed by the dark egg colour. Very often, new breeders are not very familiar with correct type for Marans...
In an age where dual purpose birds have fallen out of favor a bird that is as heavy, slow maturing, and consumptive as the Marans without having a high lay rate would be considered usless.
Have I misunderstood this statement? Marans are renown for being fast maturing.
The sebright with the white lacing is dominant white. Recessive white would not show in the first generation & cause a completely white bird in the second generation.
Dark eggs are a breed characteristic. If the bird does not lay a dark egg or have dark egg laying sisters, female offpring etc...then it is not a Marans. Those people who frequently question the characteristicsof the breed ought to take it up with the French as it was they who set the breed...
this is my freebee lemon pyle brahma, roughly 5-6 months old...i know hes hard to appriciate his hieght till you stand next to him (and i've had to go out and buy eggs now so i can get girls! these are still rare here...do you get this colour on your side of the pond?
Looking at these photos...
Don't worry what one or two people say about your eggs. Even if they lay less then a 4 they are still a Marans chicken. They do not become a different breed no more what other people say.
I agree with Katy. There is no point in asking for an opinion if one doesn't really want one. Indeed...
Am I correct in thinking these are the only silver laced Brahmas in the world?
If so I think $100 per pair is much, much too cheap. You've put a lot of years into producing such beautiful birds. They're far too special to be virtually given away for $100 per pair. I'd have said considerably...
Dilute (Di) is supposed to dilute pheomelanin to a light yellow. Your brown reds look as if they do not have Di but look dark enough to, possibly, have Mahogany (Mh). So I'd guess your birds to be ER, Mh.
To some extent autosomal red(s) is/are still being discussed. Imo gold birds would...
From what I understand, the roos without the black are showing the columbian gene which is restricting it. If your pullets have the black, then it may not matter which roo you keep... but I wouldn't want to get rid of the dark one.. just in case.
Males without columbian will have black mottled...
The Sussex breed in general are really very nice birds. The lights are rather striking too. All tend to be excellent dual purpose birds.
I have not seen many US Speckled Sussex but the ones I have seen appear undersized & also seem to have a different gene at the e-locus to their British...
The potential parents were posted and the project explained, as well as other offspring pictured that came out of that pen. How I breed them is really none of your business. The post really had nothing to do with the breed itself..it was a color question. If you don't have helpful advice, I...
Sorry Krys, the discussion is not what was in my breeding pen well over a year ago or currently, for that matter.
The question is not unreasonable. If you are asking for an informed opinion regarding the possible colour of a bird, the birds in the breeding pen where she was bred are very...
I'm not sure what you mean. They are what they are. The adult group is a mixed pen of different colored birds.
Sorry, I assumed that if you were breeding them you they would be supposed to be a certain colour or a certain cross & not a random mating. Aren't araucanas expected to be a standard...
