A List Of Things To Have For Chicks (Great for first time chicken owners)

Waterers that hang from the ceiling keeps shavings and poop out of them which is better for chicks and easier to keep clean. Do yourself a favor and have those from the beginning. Just my two cents.

My hatchery reds have large combs and waddles just like them. They could be twins. Beautiful birds!

    The order of the dog

I realized today that me dog is now in the chicken pecking order. My dog was trained early to leave chickens alone. I was hoping for indifference. Instead, this dog eats grass with them, scratches for treats and comes running when the rooster calls! And if he gets out of line, the hens peck...

    Breed and gender please

Thanks for the info. These are a mixed batch that I raised under a broody. The guy I got them from has a huge flock of different chickens so I have no idea what they are. He said that his rooster was an araucana but i dont think he really knows. Also he had just got rid of 2 other roosters a day...

    Should I butcher?

Thanks for the advice. I'm in the same situation. How old should the rooster be? Mine are only 7 weeks but I'm already dreading it. I hatched some eggs from a farmer and knew that I would end up with some roosters but the older they get, the more nervous I am.

I have no idea. I did notice on the site that they vacuum pack and label it which is included in the price.

Is there anyone who does NOT process their own meat birds?

There is a small animal processing plant here in Marion, nc (1 1/2 hours from Charlotte). It says on their website that they do ducks. It's called Foothills Pilot plant Andtheir website is foothillspilotplant.com. Not sure it would be worth the drive but if you are doing a lot of ducks it might...

    Are predators worse in winter?

I lock mine up at night and have a pretty secure coop but I wonder about the free ranging. So far I've been pretty lucky. My coop has a wood floor about 2 inches odd the ground and is totally enclosed . I will watch for the rats and look for possible entryways for pests. Thanks so much for...

    Are predators worse in winter?

This will be my first winter with chickens and am wondering if predation is worse in winter? It makes sense since they are hungrier in winter. Anyone have thoughts on this?

    WHich breed should I choose?

I went to TSC in April and officially began keeping chickens. I got some red sex links and didn't realize how clueless I was to chicken keeping. I love my chickens which are all happy and healthy. However, I would like a sustainable flock. This coming spring I would like to begin keeping...

Putting eggs in the bator on July 25, does anyone wanna hatch along???

He is a mix. His dad is an araucauna. I got the eggs from a friend with a mixed flock. He or SHE came from a brown egg and I know that the friend has BO, Barred Rock, and Silver laced wyandotte hens so I'm not sure. The broody is a mix banty that I got from a guy who wanted rid of her due to...

At first i thought my kids were playing tricks on me! My first backyard egg!

I'm so excited now that I read yur posts. I bought my reds from TSC on April 15 and they had a few feathers so I was thinking they are about the same age as yours. I know it can't be long before mine lay now. The combs are big, red and bright but no squatting or egg song. Thanks for this post...
